Scaling for USM is always challenging for any product unless it is purpose-built or overbuilt at the front end. They will use Palo Alto and its competitors, and LevelBlue will manage that implementation. The main area where the AlienVault product was lacking around the 2018 timeframe was in its ability to scale. By pushing it to a cloud-based system, they've largely alleviated scale issues. It's native in Amazon but will also run in Azure. They have worked with cloud service providers to offer enough throughput at a cost reasonable for a corporation. Scaling was their biggest problem, and they've largely conquered those issues.

Huntress Managed SIEM could be improved if there were more flexible dashboards or reporting options for different clients and security requirements, if it had more powerful filtering and correlation capabilities, just like Wazuh, and also broader native integrations with firewalls, cloud platforms, and third-party security tools. Alert customization is important. One area where I would like to see improvements is the reporting. More detailed, customizable reports which show security trends, incident timelines, and response metrics would be beneficial. The reason I chose nine out of ten is that the improvements I was discussing, which include dashboard customization and advanced filtering options, would make it easier for me to conduct investigations. The advanced log filtering and reporting flexibility also need some tuning. More control over these features would make daily investigations much easier.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The paid version of the solution has reporting and better scalability options."
"A very good feature of AlienVault OSSIM is that it has many domains that can be integrated from different solutions."
"This solution is very stable; it runs on a Linux box, you only interface with it through the GUI, it works behind the scenes, and it has never crashed in the time that I have used it."
"The dashboard is the solution's most valuable aspect; it brings everything into one central point where I can actually look at it and go, "Okay, I understand what's going on," and the solution works well and allows me to have visibility into anomalous events."
"You pay monthly for the solution. I think it's one of the best products. If you compare with other companies, like LogRhythm, etc., the top 8 or 10 CMs, I think Alien Vault has the best price-performance ratio."
"Inbuilt IDS, inbuilt integration with threat intelligence platform and with vulnerability assessment modules."
"With AlienVault you get everything in one box."
"I have deployed it widely because I find that it gives value for money."
"Huntress Managed SIEM has positively impacted our organization by helping us be more secure and more safe."
"If you want to secure your infrastructure and save a lot of time for your organization, you can use Huntress Managed SIEM."
"Overall, Huntress Managed SIEM has been a positive addition to our security operations workflow."
"Huntress Managed SIEM has positively impacted my organization primarily by helping us help our customers achieve the compliance levels at which they are trying to achieve, and it also gives us additional information when we are reacting to security events that are presented from Huntress's SOC."
"Huntress Managed SIEM was able to detect zero-days and alert our team before they could be exploited."
"Huntress Managed SIEM's response time is far superior to any other vendor we have tested in terms of MDR."
"Huntress Managed SIEM has positively impacted our organization by improving our detection times, reducing them from about half an hour to 15 or 10 minutes, and it has saved us time by sending alerts directly to our phones without logging into the portal."
"The single pane of glass management with the other security products we use from Huntress is incredibly valuable."

Cons

"The user interface needs to be friendlier across the board."
"AlienVault OSSIM could improve by having better integration with some of the newer tools."
"AlienVault OSSIM’s configuration and integration could be a little easier."
"There needs to be more focus on the NOC and IIS in terms of developing applications for behavior detection."
"The solution needs more integration with cyber intelligence systems. Our customers want to use a single tool for managing cybersecurity."
"The correlation engine needs to be improved."
"When comparing AlienVault OSSIM to other solutions it looks a bit outdated. Additionally, they need to improve their integration."
"It's under heavy traffic. If you have heavy traffic, the system is slow."
"Areas where Huntress Managed SIEM could improve include automated alert triage, events, threat intelligence context, endpoint visibility, detection and response workflows, log correlation, incident timeliness, integration with existing security tools, and reduced alert fatigue."
"I would appreciate more features in the stack. I would like Huntress Managed SIEM to integrate with EDRs like SentinelOne to combine that level of intelligence and information into their stack so that they can leverage whatever protections the client has and gather that intelligence to help with the MDR side."
"Huntress Managed SIEM can be improved with more integrations; that would always be great."
"The deployment of Huntress Managed SIEM is somewhat complex compared to ITDR and EDR, as those are just click, click, click, and next, next, finish, while SIEM requires some form of configuration."
"Huntress has experienced occasional service disruptions, including signal processing delays and potential portal issues, but it is sufficient for the company."
"I think if Huntress Managed SIEM could check in a little bit faster, that would probably be the biggest thing for improving it."
"I would like to see broader third-party integration and easier troubleshooting for log sources."
"To improve Huntress Managed SIEM, a company that wants to add more detection would need to request it from support, and I think adding custom detection features would bring real value to this product."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"OSSIM is open source, and USM is the paid license. So, if you want, you can switch to USM. There you will have to buy a license, and they have a support team that helps you out on issues you face."
"AlienVault OSSIM is free."
"The tool's licensing costs are yearly."
"We are using the community version, which can be used for free."
"I used the paid version of the tool and found it to be expensive. It has been a while since I changed to Securonix. I will have to check whether AlienVault charges per device, user, or log."
"AlienVault pricing is the best. Whatever cost you are paying, you are getting a return on every penny... It's not like your IBM, your QRadar, or Splunk, where the cost is too high."
"When comparing AlienVault OSSIM to Microsoft Sentinel, AlienVault OSSIM incurs additional costs due to its licensing price structure. If you are using AlienVault for security purposes at a certain level it can have a higher price point than the current pricing of Microsoft Sentinel."
"AlienVault OSSIM is an open-source solution."
