Automated vulnerability assessments continuously enhance security
The most valuable features probably are the ability to do automated vulnerability assessments, which it does with Amazon Inspector version two. It operates continuously, so as soon as resources are created, it scans them for vulnerabilities. This allows me to pinpoint potential security vulnerabilities and provide actionable recommendations relatively quickly. Larger enterprises usually use Inspector to gather all the vulnerabilities, the CVEs, across all accounts in an AWS organization. The enterprises I work for typically have many accounts in their organization, such as thousands of accounts where I am at the moment. It is a way to gather the vulnerabilities that are present on EC2 instances, container images, and Lambda functions.

Automated workflows have reduced manual follow-ups and improve third-party risk oversight
MetricStream's best features include its ease of use, compliance program, TPRM, audit management, and implementation effort. It effectively handles large data volumes and provides good workflow capabilities with decent reporting flexibility and a better user interface. MetricStream impacts the organization by reducing follow-ups through reminder settings during questionnaire assignments. It automatically sends reminders based on set reminders, fostering trust when configured with the organization's email domain. Metrics improvements like operational efficiency, centralized GRC management, enhanced risk visibility, streamlined compliance, reduced manual efforts, enhanced third-party risk monitoring, improved decision-making with real-time dashboards, and risk analytics follow from automated workflows and issue tracking.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I recommend Amazon Inspector because it allows the automation of processes and requires less manual monitoring."
"The vulnerability discovery is valuable, and they also rank those vulnerabilities for you. So, you could rapidly attack some of the higher, severe vulnerabilities as they pop up, if they do pop up."
"The most valuable feature of Amazon Inspector is the categorization of findings, which filters vulnerabilities by instance, container image, container repository, and Lambda function."
"It operates continuously, so as soon as resources are created, it scans them for vulnerabilities."
"My experience with AWS technical support is very good, I didn't face any specific challenges, and even the documentation of AWS is good for both Microsoft, which is Azure, and AWS."
"The scalability of the solution itself is unparalleled."
"It is scanning the whole repository for any sort of vulnerabilities, so it allows us to be more confident in our DevSecOps and not put a lot of folks or attention to it."
"The findings dashboards are neat and easy to understand, offering clear demarcations for different types of findings and detailed insights into specific vulnerabilities and their associated instances. It is not a place where everything is dumped together. It offers an easy-to-understand layout."
"It has good features and good functionality, and our customers feel there is a lot of merit in that."
"Key features are usability and ease of configuration, and it allows us to have all the information in a single place and provide real-time indicators and information for our executives."
"MetricStream definitely impacts my organization positively because it is very useful and offers low-code utilities to configure all components, allowing team members to complete tasks quickly."
"MetricStream has impacted my organization positively as it helps implement the main QMS modules through this platform only: change control, deviation, and CAPA implementation, as I explained earlier."
"MetricStream positively impacts our organization significantly by saving costs and enhancing our risk and compliance maturity."
"Centralizing those processes has reduced errors and made audits faster while improving collaboration, as reviewers can log in at any point to see pending actions and who is responsible for them without the confusion of shared Excel sheets."
"For our client, MetricStream made the audits incredibly efficient, and in real time, I could provide the status of the audit to stakeholders, indicating which controls had deviations, which control was pending, and who it was pending on."
"The interface is mobile-friendly and it is getting a good response from our customers."

Cons

"It has a limited scope. So, AWS Inspector primarily focuses on the security of the EC2 instance. So, if your architecture includes other AWS services, then you may need to use additional tools for your comprehensive security assessment. So that is one con. Another is, like, we have a dependency on agents."
"There isn't too much to improve right now. Scanning on demand or as a part of the pipeline versus a post pipeline solution would be good, but it is not a deal breaker by any means."
"The other point is that the reporting features of Inspector need improvement. For example, I am in an organization with millions of CVEs, and getting an overview of all this is challenging."
"One area for improvement in Amazon Inspector is the automation aspect."
"There is room for improvement in the scanning capabilities. I'd like to see broader coverage in terms of the vulnerabilities detected."
"There are challenges associated with the interdependencies in AWS services, like requiring an Active Directory for other services, resulting in additional charges."
"One major area for improvement is remediation. My team works on remediating findings over time, likely using available patches. However, easier integration with Amazon's patching services would be very helpful."
"It has automated vulnerability assessment, yet I seek more flexibility in defining custom vulnerability checks tailored to my needs, which is more difficult."
"I would like to see out-of-the-box integration with more security, it would be helpful."
"MetricStream's scalability is adaptable, though the biggest issue I have encountered with clients has been around upgrades that require re-implementing customizations to the out-of-box solutions after significant upgrades."
"From my standpoint, MetricStream is a bit costly. We spend a significant amount of money for the product, and I cannot disclose specifics due to confidentiality."
"Since I have used MetricStream for the last three years, one of the top improvements that comes to my mind is enhanced user experience and UX/UI."
"MetricStream is a very costly application; we cannot save money."
"MetricStream is stable, but it is not 100% stable. It is a good product, yet I experience more data losses and flow control issues as data volume increases."
"Currently, I believe MetricStream has sufficient functionality, but for the Indian banking sector, the UI and overall complexity could be improved, as many Indian banks require a simplified UI."
"I think we were a bit skeptical about pricing and setup costs, as it required a significant upfront investment, but it is ultimately worth it since we see positive results from the investment, despite having to extend our budget to accommodate it."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The lowest cost would be around $10 for a few small accounts, however, for thousands of accounts, it could be around $5000 to $6000 dollars per month."
"It's priced according to market standards for its services."
"The pricing is very transparent and clear."
"It is scaled as you go. There are probably a certain number of scans per month, and there are tiers. If you're under a certain tier, it is free. The second level is pennies, and then all the way up to like a million. So, it has a tiered pricing program. They're pretty good with your initial scanning, and there is room to scale based on being affordable, but it is fairly cheap. There are no additional costs. They pretty much think about it as a pay-per-scan type model."
"They are flexible in terms of customers' needs."
