The ability to configure rules to check for consistency has helped
Apiary provides a free tier of the platform which allows a small group of developers to collaborate easily on the design of open source APIs. In addition to this, it provides mock endpoints allowing people to experiment with the API without depending or having to stand up a real backend. With our clients, using Apiary allows us to very quickly pull together an API definition (particularly when using API Blueprint). The whole API design process for the simpler use cases can be done in a relatively short workshop which makes it a lot easier to agree, publish, version-manage an API definition with suitable documentation. This can then be evolved and enhanced (particularly in the documentation aspects). With the ability to support Swagger (Open API v2 and introducing/ed support for v3) and API Blueprint makes it a very versatile tool.

Has supported smooth channel partner integration and data analysis for several years
We use the existing services hosted in Microsoft Azure API Management without making any changes. For transformation capabilities, we utilize ADF, Data Factory instead of Microsoft Azure API Management. Regarding security features in Microsoft Azure API Management, we utilize token bearer authentication. As retailers with integration to our channel partners, we haven't experienced any security issues with Microsoft Azure API Management since it isn't exposed to external parties. We use a basic Azure function hosted in Microsoft Azure API Management rather than the integrated developer portal. Tracking analytics and performance analytics in Microsoft Azure API Management is straightforward. We use basic features for performance analytics and log analytics due to additional subscription charges. We enabled log analytics for Microsoft Azure API Management in the past month to investigate issues such as unreachable endpoints or request timeouts.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I do like the overall performance of the solution."
"Quick and easy way to share a new API design with teams."
"In two years, there was one time the service was down for an hour or so."
"This solution has allowed us to standardize API definitions and bring consistency into our shared components, reducing the effort and cost of using functionality across domains within the organization, with Apiary being crucial to our good API strategy."
"Git integration"
"Vey high - very easy API design with no setup effort"
"The feature I find most valuable is that it offers authentication and allows us to develop communication points."
"I find the generation of mock services very useful, especially when demonstrating for new consumers."
"The most valuable feature would be the easy integration into the entire Microsoft environment, like Access Directory, the collaboration tooling, the development tooling, basically the integration into the Microsoft universe."
"It's a very robust tool. So you see that there is a developer portal which can be used by developer or the vendors as well. And other external partners to create keys and manage their own APIs. The other thing is that they have a lot of policies there are too many options within API. So I do the difficult to tell one, but probably I would say, like, proxy sorry. The policies is one of the thing wherein you can just configure the policies and modify the behavior of the APIs."
"We chose Azure because it's easy to deploy and it's cheap."
"We use Microsoft due to the stability of the company."
"The user management is pretty seamless."
"The most valuable features of Microsoft Azure API Management are the easy configuration and deployment with automation."
"API Management is scalable based on the load."
"The solution is reliable and very stable."

Cons

"Swagger (OpenAPI Specification) and Blueprint Support"
"Better Swagger support."
"Validation messages could be a bit clearer."
"I would like an integrated option to download a Swagger version of the definition."
"The Oracle release cycle is very bad because the patches only update once a year."
"I don't think this solution is very stable so we try to manage stability from our side."
"Microsoft Azure API Management should have the ability to allow multitenancy."
"Expansion to global regions is a point for improvement, as licensing is costly."
"This solution is only available as a cloud-based deployment and it would be very helpful to have an on-premises version."
"Any organization looking to implement Microsoft Azure API Management should look at other alternatives."
"If comparing it to other solutions, it is more of a legacy design with an older approach."
"Azure API Management lacks integration capabilities seen in other tools."
"Microsoft is huge, and when it comes to support, it's not so great as compared to, if you have something software specific. Whenever you ask them a question, they assume you to know everything."
"Some of the DevOps stuff could be easier to work with. The migration paths are a little complicated, and moving code around could be more seamless. There should be less manual migration when several teams work together to publish code to the DevOps."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There is a free subscription option to start and try the service."
"It is easy to get started with personal (free) accounts, but a subscription is required for additional features."
"Since everyone is isocentric here, it is reasonable for me."
"The licensing fees are expensive."
"The solution is highly expensive. Our customers worry about the costs. The price should be a lot less."
"Microsoft is competitively priced."
"It's being paid monthly."
"It's free for less than ten users. If you want to go beyond that, it's around $3.50 per user per month. If you want a DevOps integration, it's about $7.50 per user per month. Costs depend on the size, complexity, usage, and what facility you want to integrate. So, we use Microsoft Azure and have the entire DevOps and Visual Studio on the cloud. We get all three flavors for $7.50 per user per month."
"It is an expensive solution, but any API solution will be expensive."
"Azure API Management is the most expensive solution on the market."
