Stable performance and effective control over user access to specific applications and websites
I'm not sure about its scalability since most of my deployments are for small to medium-sized companies. I haven't faced any scalability issues so far. It runs smoothly. I don't use dedicated appliances; instead, I have it running on existing PCs. And it works fine. I haven't experienced any throughput issues or similar problems. I have around five or six different clients using Untangle Application Control.

Granular controls have boosted productivity by blocking unproductive applications at work
I have been using Check Point Application Control for more than three years. The best feature is that we can configure and deploy Check Point Application Control based on application categories, determining whether we need to allow or block access for a particular user or an entire subnet of the network. We can even control application usage at the granular level. For example, if we want to allow Facebook usage in our organization but want only uploading or chatting to be allowed with other functions blocked, we can achieve that through application controls. The configuration for Check Point Application Control is straightforward. The configuration part for granular controls is straightforward and very easy to implement. One valuable aspect is that the database updates for Check Point Application Control are automated. We do not have to perform any manual updates, which is also a good feature of the application control. Since we have been using Check Point Application Control, we are able to control unused application categories, such as applications that are not related to our organization's work environment. We are blocking those effectively, and therefore, the productivity of our organization's employees has increased significantly. We can generate reports of application usage and clearly see in the logs that we have successfully blocked unused applications. When a user makes a request, it is directly blocked, preventing them from accessing those unproductive applications in the network.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Content filtering is really easy to use. We have rules for content filtering. One of the rules that we have is that if it is not an SSL site, it should block the site. It scans, and if it finds a bad site, it is not going to allow it. We can also block based on what the company wants us to block. If the company wants us to block porn, we'll block porn. If the company wants to block social media, we're going to block social media."
"Application filter features are the most valuable for us."
"The fact that I can limit access to certain apps is the most valuable feature for me. For example, I can restrict access to specific websites or certain functions within websites."
"One of the features that I like overall on their firewall is that they've got free cloud management that comes with your subscription."
"It does not require a lot of work to be activated and used."
"The central management system provides a reliable platform for application control and URL filtering."
"Check Point Application Control offers a wide selection of applications, and even within those, you can configure uploads, downloads, et cetera, on a very granular level."
"Bandwidth management with Check Point Application Control allows the organization to prioritize business-critical traffic such as Microsoft Teams, Office 365, and similar applications, ensuring that critical applications remain fast and reliable during peak hours."
"Check Point is a very good solution because these applications are constantly updating the IP lists on the backend."
"The best feature about Check Point Application Control is that its database is very strong, and the categorization of the application is outstanding, so we are able to block applications based on the categories."
"It has enhanced security posture."
"This product logs & monitors event traffic for each application, giving us better visibility."

Cons

"Reporting functionality could be improved to provide more comprehensive insights."
"The only thing that they need to improve is that they drop sessions. Currently, if you see a session come in, such as a DHCP session or a VPN session, you don't have the ability to click on that session, hit drop, and have them re-negotiate. It would be a really nice feature, and they are working on it. This is the only feature that is missing."
"The only thing that they need to improve is that they drop sessions."
"There is room for improvement in blocking torrents."
"Something important to mention is the improvement at the support level. It could be more advanced."
"The pricing, setup cost, and licensing of Check Point Application Control are higher than other vendors, but it justifies the features offered."
"Sometimes Check Point Application Control provides false positives. We allow some websites or domains, but it still blocks them under certain categories."
"The blocking characteristics for filtering content currently are not so customizable."
"I think that the pricing for the Check Point products should be reconsidered - we found it to be quite expensive to purchase and to maintain (the licenses and the support services need to be prolonged regularly), or create some additional bundles of the software blades with significant discounts in addition to the current Next Generation Threat Prevention & SandBlast (NGTX) and Next Generation Threat Prevention (NGTP) offers."
"Every solution has space to improve, which is why I've chosen nine out of 10 for Check Point Application Control."
"There is some performance lag on the device itself when we turn on Check Point Application Control features."
"We would like the product to be a bit more user-friendly in general."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Everything is included on the firewall at one price point, and we sell it for $70 a month, which includes the hardware."
"I use the free version of Untangle."
"It's a bit expensive and it could be cheaper, but it's part of business politics."
"The blade has its cost but you can take advantage of the license package to pay less for it."
"The price of Check Point Application Control is high. The support and ecosystem around the solution are expensive."
"I think application control has become a basic feature and it should be enabled automatically, without having to purchase a separate license for it."
"Check Point Application Control is expensive. The tool's licensing costs are yearly."
