Centralized scheduling has improved automation and reduces manual monitoring for complex workflows
The best features JAMS Scheduler offers are centralized job scheduling, dependency management, and monitoring. I also appreciate the alerts and retry options because they help us handle failures without constantly checking jobs manually. Centralized scheduling makes it easier to manage all our jobs from one place instead of maintaining multiple schedulers or scripts. Dependency management is especially useful for chaining workflows because JAMS Scheduler can automatically trigger the next job only when the required previous step completes successfully. Another useful feature is the monitoring and alerting. If a scheduled job fails or runs longer than expected, we can quickly identify it and take action, which is particularly helpful for production support and reducing manual monitoring. JAMS Scheduler has helped quite a bit with identifying common job failures, missed schedules, dependency issues, and execution errors. The alerts and job history make it easier to identify the failure point and take corrective action without manually checking every workflow. JAMS Scheduler's code-driven automation has been useful for handling more complex scheduling logic and workflows that go beyond simple time-based triggers. It is important for us because we can combine scripts, dependencies, conditions, and parameters to support different production scenarios without creating too much manual intervention.

Unified orchestration has reduced costs and improves governance for complex data workflows
I would say it would be much more helpful if Astro by Astronomer can provide an MCP to use and integrate with Astro by Astronomer and their AI agent Auto, so that we can use our tools like Claude, Code, or Cursor to have a central location where we integrate that MCP in Databricks via the AI gateway, and then we can have a place where we can connect to Astro by Astronomer, Databricks, other tools such as Jira and DataDog, and then have a much more comprehensive analysis and overview and monitoring of the entire data ecosystem. Having an MCP integration would tremendously help us to have a more comprehensive data platform that is more AI-ready. That is one of the features that I can think of. Another thought would be having an integration with Kubernetes instead of just scheduling everything on Astro by Astronomer workers. That would be helpful. One thing I can think of is that the Astro by Astronomer local developer environment can be improved further, but perhaps that is a very niche use case that I have in mind, and it may not be useful for others. There is room for improvement around having an improved UI and also integration with other tools. On governance, I would say we can have a more granular level of governance even inside workspaces. Having much more granular control over people belonging to the same team in Astro by Astronomer could have different access to different DAGs, depending upon our tagging strategy. That is one of the areas I can suggest in terms of improvement. The AI capabilities can be improved further. I would compare the current AI capabilities to newer models provided by Claude such as Opus or Codex.

There are areas of AutoSys Workload Automation that have room for improvement. They are implementing good enhancements in the R24 release. The web UI needs some improvement. Cloud integrations are limited to 25 or 30 configurable plugins and integrations to the cloud. They can improve in that area. They have separate tools, not AutoSys Workload Automation, such as Atomic and other SaaS-based solutions that can run inside the cloud. AutoSys Workload Automation can be configured in the cloud, but it requires a substantial number of VMs depending on the load. For on-premises deployment, it is a very good solution. They need to increase their footprint in the cloud and improve the web UI. They are making excellent progress in the R24 release.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"By using JAMS, we have gained a lot more efficiencies in terms of all of those to streamline it, and there is no necessary need for having an overnight engineer just keeping an eye on all of this."
"Being able to automate things ensures that things can run overnight or in the early morning when it needs to, and it frees up a lot of bandwidth for my time during the day when I don't need to be bothered with handling all of these repetitive tasks."
"The code-driven automation for more complex scheduling requirements frees up time because it's really easy to use... It's almost like a stand-alone software that we can't live without."
"While I appreciate the other features, the agent stands out for its ease of installation and configuration for JAMS monitoring."
"Previously, we manually managed file transfers by writing our scripts. The automated MFT feature is great for me and the company. It helps us know where the files are going and enables us to track errors if anything fails. It also makes the connection seamless for third-party vendors."
"The most valuable feature for us is that it's DR-ready. With respect to disaster recovery, it has the built-in capability for failover to our DR site. If all of the required ports are open, it can be done seamlessly."
"It makes everything that we want to do so much easier. We have had a number of instances in the past where we have had developers who have been working on a project, and even though we have had JAMS for all these years, they will create some SQL Server Agent job, or something like that, to run a task. When it is in code review and development is complete, the question always comes around, "Can JAMS do this?" The answer has always been, "Yes." Pretty much anything we have ever developed could be run by JAMS."
"What my team needs are tools to reliably execute all the jobs, minimize the risks, and support high-availability, and JAMS does the job."
"I saved a significant amount of time compared to my previous setup as I deployed Astro by Astronomer on my local machine in about five minutes, whereas with the Airflow documentation it took much more time and was very painful compared to the Astro by Astronomer deployment."
"The best features Astro by Astronomer offers, in my opinion, are easy setup and good tutorials."
"In one year, we save a lot of time using Astro by Astronomer because we do not need to deploy different components of Airflow one by one."
"I think that Astro by Astronomer is a good example of how data orchestration is important to the company when we think about big data and ingestion from many external companies or external institutions that bring to us data that is important to provide final products that can provide to the company the best decision-making in the future for the company regarding revenue, costs, and guidelines for the company that want to grow at a very fast pace."
"Astro by Astronomer has positively impacted my organization by significantly improving developer productivity, reducing downtimes, alleviating overhead associated with upgrades, and delivering nearly a 45% reduction in cloud spending, translating to a high return on investment."
"I think the possibility to save time developing DAG in a smarter way with Astro by Astronomer is a significant benefit because, as I mentioned before, it suggests the best operator for your use case."
"The best features that Astro by Astronomer offers are fairly fast deployment, convenient integration with Airflow, and it is quite easy to scale."
"Astro by Astronomer has positively impacted my organization because it has helped me save time due to the big support and large community, allowing them to help me solve problems that I encounter while working with Astronomer."
"Visibility into the workflow and ease of use to be able to schedule have improved our organization."
"The integration that it provides and the auditing features are the most valuable to us."
"It has improved our organization by automating processes in a centralized platform, making us more productive and enabling us to provide better value to the business."
"We need to have things run in a very sequential order, so it is very useful that we can schedule the work flows."
"It is a fairly stable solution."
"Automic Automation Engine provides us the ability to map logic using a scripting language, giving us an advantage where practically all automation problems can easily be implemented within the Automation Engine."
"The web UI is beneficial and the granular security policies allow us to cover all of our audit requirements."
"CA7 is very robust and one of CA's legacy products."

Cons

"Another improvement I suggest for JAMS Scheduler is concerning the JAMS Scheduler desktop client. After prolonged non-use, it just freezes for me, and I cannot even close the scheduler."
"The cost has definitely gone up tremendously. That is where I do know, as much as the feature sets are there, and if the newly acquired company is going to be doing a pushback, they might just say, 'Do we still need to pay this much? Or at that point, should we look into an alternative?'"
"There could be a better simulation for banning the termination. You have to simulate every one of the processes in order to have an idea for better planning. This kind of simulation is broken and needs improvement."
"We have had a lot of people working from home who can't always connect to the JAMS server. We use VPN, as most companies do, and we have it set up so that everybody can access the JAMS server. But many times, our people cannot access it... JAMS could do a better job of telling you what the problem is when you try to log in to the server."
"It is important to receive notifications if a charged job fails and SQL is halted. JAMS does not provide halted notifications by default, which is a critical feature that needs to be added."
"The biggest area with room for improvement is the area that my organization benefits the most from using JAMS, and that is in custom execution methods. I happen to have a very good C# developer. Ever since we got JAMS, he has spent a lot of time talking to JAMS developers, researching the JAMS libraries, and creating custom execution methods. He's gotten very good at it. He is now able to create them and maintain them very easily, but that knowledge was hard-won knowledge. It was difficult to come by, and if I should ever lose this developer, then I would be hard-pressed to find anyone who could create JAMS custom execution methods quite as well as he can since there really isn't all that much help, such as documentation or information, available on how to create custom execution methods."
"I would like to see the ability to interface with Microsoft group-managed service accounts, but they're still in the research phase. They need to ensure everything's legit and safe. The report designer and dashboards could also be improved. We're running 7.3, so I don't know if they have updated the reporting in 7.5, but I think the reports and dashboards could be better."
"JAMS has built-in reporting. I've never really used it. I tried using it a few years ago and I couldn't figure it out. It was wonky. It could be improved upon."
"I think that one year ago, Astro by Astronomer needed to improve in reliability because it was a bit slow to develop and sometimes it crashed."
"Astro by Astronomer is doing great, and while improvement opportunities exist, particularly around the cost model, which can occasionally feel steep, I generally find it quite favorable."
"After using Astro by Astronomer for four years, I can say it has evolved significantly, which is positive; however, improving the debugging experience for complex workflows remains a pain point."
"I think there is an aspect of the tool that has caused me some difficulty, which is the scheduler, and I think it could be more intuitive or efficient."
"Astro by Astronomer could improve by reducing costs or decreasing infrastructure management and having less dependency on Kubernetes so that the infrastructure is simpler."
"I think Astro by Astronomer could improve its pricing, as it is really expensive, especially if you want to have large use in a large-scale enterprise edition, which requires you to create a VPC hosted instance that significantly increases expenses."
"I think Astro by Astronomer could improve by providing more visibility and webinars about the new features they are releasing for Airflow, as since we migrated to Astro, we have not had the opportunity to fully utilize or have considered that we are not using the latest up-to-date features."
"If I had to pick one thing that could be improved, it would be the speed when working in clouds."
"I think the interface could be unified in a better way."
"The scalability is poor because I cannot use it for all automation solutions."
"The job flow could use a little more improvement."
"Pricing model for distributed should have an Enterprise option."
"The reliability issues need to be resolved."
"The visibility and control features are somewhat limited."
"We would like to see good improvement on the historical reporting capabilities."
"Ease of implementation for upgrades."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"JAMS is relatively inexpensive, with additional costs only incurred for tags, other services, and optional support renewals."
"The product is reasonably priced, and we don't have any add-ons."
"For what it does, the product is priced very well."
"This is a good product at a fair price."
"Our licensing is pretty cheap because we have a state solution. So, we pay only $1,000 a year."
"I haven't been involved in the financial side for several years, but we buy one host and unlimited agents, and we get a reasonable price for that. We're happy with the amount we pay and the scalability it provides."
"In the end, you'll find that it's really worth the price. There is some sticker shock, but it's worth every dime."
"All licensing models are a little overpriced, but JAMS offers a good value, especially given their support response times and ability to handle unforeseen issues like the SFTP transfers. I hope to find more use cases to get a better bang for our buck."
Information not available
"I don't have information on the exact licensing cost of AutoSys Workload Automation because that's managed by the tools and financing teams. For agents, it's close to $4,00, but for the server setup, it's usually a one-time license initially, and it's AMC which is paid every year and comes close to $8,000 to $10,000."
"There is an annual license to use AutoSys Workload Automation."
"The price of this solution is reasonable and there is an annual license required."
"It is overpriced."
"People need to pay attention to how they use their ESP agents on the distributed platform. That's where some of the cost comes in, based on how many you need or how many you use."
"I certainly think the pricing is worth the value."
"The return on investment would be very high because doing things manually without this product would be extremely expensive."
"Validate how many agents you need beforehand."
