Has enabled us to manage compute resources efficiently while supporting multiple languages
AWS Lambda needs to improve cold start time. Some AWS Lambda functions require a cold start, and if you need AWS Lambda to provide quick responses, you need some of the AWS Lambdas to be always on, which is risky. We need AWS Lambda's cold start time to be reduced so that we can use it much faster than now. We need a better way to handle the cold start. We should be able to start AWS Lambda much before in a predictable way instead of just calling and then having it start.

A solution for data pipelines but has connector limitations
We have used Kafka for seven years. IBM streams gives you many OOTB features that can boost the time-to-market, especially when it comes to reporting and monitoring for example. Confluent is recognized as one of the leaders in this space and the main reason for this is related to the complete vision of the platform also the large number of connectors. This gives the edge and competitive advatnage.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is highly scalable."
"The main features of this solution are the ability to integrate multiple AWS applications or external applications very quickly and organize all of them by leveraging server-less computing power of AWS, and additionally, it is easy to use and you can run various programming languages, such as Python, Go, and Java."
"Lambda makes the administration of all our services related to Amazon really easy."
"The thing that I have found most valuable in Lambda is primarily the ease of developing the services we distribute."
"The most valuable features are event-based triggers. They're really good for a reactive style when you want things to happen as soon as something else happens."
"It's a serverless solution which is the best feature, it helps us because it offers free aspects, and from the infrastructure perspective, it helps us manage costs so there is no overhead of estimating how much infrastructure we're going to need and we can focus on building the business functionality that we want to build."
"AWS Lambda is used for the whole surface, it does the backups, and schedules, and learns some of the core functionalities but it can depend on the topic or application."
"The programming language and the integration with other AWS services are the most valuable features."
"Easy development and deployment, Java implementation features, and the real time analyser and alarm function are the most valuable features for us."
"The OEM Solution (Excel-medical.com) running on top of IBM Streams provides real-time clinical algorithms that can give better insight into the patient's acuity, thus cutting off time to discharge patients and inversely making sure that sick patients don't get discharged until ready."
"As a result, the TELCO company was able to cut down the time it took to respond to customer needs and there were fewer complaints."
"The product has enabled us to create solutions to client problems that would have either been impossible or very expensive/difficult using other technologies."

Cons

"Another challenge I've noticed is that there is a limit to the environment variables such as the 4 KB limit."
"We need to better understand Lambda for different scenarios. We need some joint effort between Amazon and the users to have the users identify how they can really leverage Lambda. It's not about Lambda itself; it's about the practice, the guidance. There needs to be very good documentation. From the user perspective, what exists now is not always enough."
"I would like the layers to have a bigger volume. I would like to be able to add more. I don't want to be limited by the layer."
"The support team does not know how to implement and build the solution."
"There were some timeout issues with AWS Lambda as the options provided didn't suit our business cases."
"Memory limitation is one of the weaknesses of AWS Lambda and as a result, we have to use several Lambda, instead of just one. Recently, I met with an Amazon employee, who is responsible for Lambda as a product. It appears Amazon has some plans with Lambda, so I don’t have to add something to the additional features."
"AWS Lambda could improve by having no-code or low-code options because currently, you need to be able to write code well to use it."
"There's room for improvement in the solution's warm start, which refers to the minimum time it takes to start up a Lambda function if you haven't been running it."
"We had some stability issues where we used embedded Zookeeper in production."
"The development IDE sometimes crashes and freezes."
"I’d like to see a tool kit specifically targeted at incremental machine learning. It’s already great for scoring previously trained models, but dynamically updating models is currently more of a 'grow your own' kind of thing."
"The price and versatility of this product need to improve - it is not inexpensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Lambda is a good and cheap solution and I would recommend it to those without a huge payload."
"AWS is slightly more expensive than Azure."
"We don't need to pay for licensing to use Lambda."
"We only need to pay for the compute time our code consumes."
"The solution follows a pay-as-you-go licensing model, which results in cost savings."
"The price is expensive and is based on usage. The more users you have the higher the cost."
"The solution is part of the AWS subscription model that is paid annually."
"This is a product that is pay-per-use, as opposed to a licensing fee."

Questions from the Community

Which is better, AWS Lambda or Batch?
AWS Lambda is a serverless solution. It doesn’t require any infrastructure, which allows for cost savings. There is no setup process to deal with, as the entire solution is in the cloud. If you use...
What is your experience regarding pricing and costs for AWS Lambda?
My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing has been positive. Based on the execution and time duration of execution, it is much cheaper than expected.
What needs improvement with AWS Lambda?
AWS Lambda could be improved regarding the execution time size, as the duration of execution time is fixed at 15 minutes currently, so we could increase it. I don't have anything more to add about ...
