A highly stable tool that needs to improve its security
The most valuable features of the solution stem from the fact that the tool provides security features, and AWS serves as a certificate of trust for its uses. The tool is easy to set up, and it secures your internet connection, so your IP address and email are not exposed over the internet since the VPN has the ability to mask the IP addresses of users after users get an Amazon ID to use for internet browsing.

An area for improvement is the pricing model. The concurrent user licenses get expensive pretty quickly as your organization grows, so more flexible pricing options would be a huge plus. Another area is configurational disconnect. While the admin web UI handles about 90% of what you need, the moment you have to do deep, advanced routing customization, you still have to drop back to the command line interface to make those changes. It would be great to see those deeper configurations completely integrated into the web portal. Lastly, it would be awesome to see native support for newer, lighter protocols through WireGuard built straight into the platform alongside standard OpenVPN for better performance efficiency.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is a very stable solution. Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"OpenVPN Access Server has positively impacted my organization by supporting remote work and improving security since users must authenticate through the VPN first before accessing services such as RDP and SSH, which reduces our attack surface."
"I like that it's free."
"I have found the stability to be good."
"We use the solution to access remote services."
"We use OpenVPN Access Server to connect from site to site from our data center to our customer site and to dial and access our VPN to our network."
"The best features OpenVPN Access Server offers are ease of setup, and it is just easy."
"The compatibility with almost any Linux operating system, and how easy it is to write scripts and generate keys for people to use and log in. I found it easy to deploy quickly."
"The most valuable thing about OpenVPN Access Server is its ease of use."

Cons

"Security is an area of concern in the product where the solution needs to improve."
"I rate the price for OpenVPN as overpriced at the moment."
"I would like to see continued advanced security implementation."
"There are certain shortcomings in the product's stability that need improvement."
"There was one annoying feature where we had to disable and enable the user. I cannot remember what it was exactly, but I think it was for a password lockout. It would be nice if there was a checkbox, or something, in the web interface to allow you to unlock a user whose password was locked."
"My impression of the connection speed when using OpenVPN Access Server compared to other VPN solutions is that it is stable and reliable, but it can be resource-heavy compared to newer solutions, handling day-to-day corporate traffic well while experiencing higher CPU utilization and slightly slower connection throughput compared directly to lighter protocols like WireGuard."
"They may have this already, but it would be nice to be able to get more notifications if a site drops unexpectedly."
"From the user experience perspective, OpenVPN Access Server should be more user-friendly in the East Africa market where I am located."
"The connection speed utilizing OpenVPN Access Server is notably slow, with high latency affecting performance."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The tool is not completely available for free, especially if you want to use certain features for which the cost is very minimal."
"OpenVPN is an open-source solution. If the solution is used for personal use it is free. For non-personal use, the solution can be expensive."
"It is free, you buy support."
"With regard to setup cost, pricing and/or licensing, the simple answer is that you'll need to set aside some time to learn it and experiment with it."
"The licensing has a fixed pricing."
"The solution was free of charge."
"OpenVPN Access Server is free and open source."
"OpenVPN is a free and open-source solution."
"Begin with the community version and upgrade to paid one if the need arises."
