Unified data models have supported end‑to‑end lineage and governed multi‑layer architectures
Synchronization is vital since I experience multiple problems, such as mismatched models and manual DDL handling. Improving the synchronization between models and databases can enhance integration and mitigate weak implementations. Additionally, enhanced version control integration with tools like Git would facilitate better management of changes and provide greater control over the modeling process. Regarding pricing, SAP PowerDesigner is relatively high-cost compared to other tools, though its extensive capabilities justify the expense. While many freeware options exist, SAP PowerDesigner stands out as a robust tool that handles various aspects of data standardization, lineage tracking, and modeling efficiently. Although access can be limited to a select number of users, SAP PowerDesigner is worthy of its price tag given its performance compared to alternatives like Erwin or Oracle Database Designer.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The product's most valuable feature is adaptability."
"By using SAP PowerDesigner, we are able to create a product that is always up to date, so the model always represents the implementation."
"Very good repository features."
"The physical database model is definitely the most valuable feature because it describes normalization exactly the way you understand the data, and it deploys it perfectly with open source systems."
"The main valuable features are the logical and physical data modeling capabilities, and our main purpose is to keep the data model in a repository and then be able to generate DDL files for Oracle."
"The solution is a very pragmatic tool. It's quite easy to use."
"The most valuable feature of SAP PowerDesigner is the testing of the models, it has the best function. Reverse engineering is very helpful too."
"In summary, this product gives you all of the features that a modeler would require to produce both logical and physical data models."
"It is a very stable solution, which is one of the advantages of using PowerDesigner, especially in big databases."

Cons

"They could provide a simplified process for building and deploying solutions in the cloud."
"The user interface could be more user-friendly."
"There are some minor things that could be easier. We're writing up procedures to bring all the modeling back into one group as this reduces delays in production."
"There are many areas of this solution that needs to be changed."
"They didn't spend any time on the issue because according to them, 16.5 is not supported."
"However, the pricing for small consultancies needs to be improved. The competing vendors often have special offers that make the tool more affordable, which is vital for data management consultancies that have to buy the tools that their clients use."
"Reverse-engineering of late JDK and .NET. Use third party parsers and enhance Object-Oriented metamodel to cater for newer language features."
"Better support for integration with open-source technologies is needed. For example, I try to use open-source databases such as Postgres and MySQL instead of Microsoft, DB2, or Oracle, however, I think it's lacking in capability from the tool to the database."
"It also has a web portal feature, which is much more convenient for giving people access to look at entity-relationship diagrams, but that web portal is unstable and does not work. It freezes up all the time."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The platform’s pricing depends on the specific project requirements."
"I bought the software outright and do not pay a licensing fee."
"PowerDesigner is not the cheapest solution on the market, so make sure that you are using it to its full potential."
"Regarding costs, SAP PowerDesigner is pricey, as I've heard from my team manager, which is why the company has been thinking of bringing another solution on board."
"The price of the solution is low."
"The ROI has been 43%."
"SAP PowerDesigner is cheaper than eriwin."
"The pricing varies based on functionality and users."
"I would like SAP to prove free licenses to professionals that are using the solution. The free version is limited."
