Secure mesh has strengthened zero‑trust traffic and improves compliance visibility
The most valuable features for us are automatic mTLS with a strong identity model, which is critical for a fintech environment where encrypted east-west traffic is non-negotiable. Authorization policies are essential because the ability to explicitly define and enforce which services can call each other has been extremely powerful from a compliance and zero-trust standpoint. Operational simplicity is another valuable feature, as Linkerd’s lightweight design and straightforward control plane reduce cognitive and operational load compared to other meshes. Lastly, having enterprise support and stability through a supported enterprise build with security patches and predictable releases gives us confidence in production.

I think HAProxy is good as it stands now, but I believe there could be improvements. gRPC has recently been implemented, which is great, along with TLS 1.2 and 1.3 support, and HTTP 2.0 is also available. However, I'm unsure about the benchmark of those HTTP 2.0 requests on HAProxy. If there were any other protocol with better performance than HTTP 2.0, or perhaps mTLS and other similar features, including that in HAProxy would be really great. For improvements, I think that during setup and configuration, the steps provided are neat and clear. Anyone can easily install and configure it. There are many kernel tuning parameters also available, which is great. For specific improvement, in terms of logging, I think printing the full object of the request may help, or if there's a way to reference two requests, it would be beneficial to find a complete session history from a logged-in customer, as it would help analyze customer and user analytics.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Buoyant Enterprise provides superb support, and the cost savings from HAZL make the license almost cost neutral."
"Buoyant Enterprise for Linkerd has made it simple for us to deploy and operate Linkerd across our clusters."
"Buoyant Enterprise for Linkerd significantly improved our security posture by enforcing mTLS across all services with minimal operational complexity."
"Security and compliance have been enhanced with Zero Trust featuring mTLS, workload identity, and end-to-end encryption without code changes."
"Scalable and inexpensive."
"What I like best about the product is its simplicity and speed. When you need to set up a load balancer quickly, HAProxy offers options like sticky sessions and round-robin. It's also fast to configure, including adding SSL for security. While it may have fewer options than other solutions like F5, HAProxy gets the job done for basic load-balancing tasks."
"We use it as a load balancer for our application servers."
"There are no issues when it is running; it is stable and very good."
"Since the deployment is very easy and the open-source functionality saves a huge amount of cost in terms of project deployment."
"Stability is number one."
"We have reduced a lot of servers, replacing them with one or two HAProxy servers which deliver better performance, accuracy, and an almost 100% success rate with requests coming from customers or other sources, and there are no loopholes, disconnects, or gaps in the entire data flow."
"The feature that I have found the most valuable is that it works for my use case of application load balancing. I'm using it for PeerSense, and it's easy enough for PeerSense."

Cons

"I hope HAZL load bands can be tuned more easily or even automatically."
"Sometimes it's challenging to get through the log, and you need a log to understand what is going on. It isn't easy to map the logging with the documentation, and every time I read the log, I have to pull out the documentation to understand what I'm reading."
"The web stats UI, which provides the status of the health and numbers, could greatly benefit from having a RESTful interface to control the load-balanced nodes. Although there is a hack around the UI (by issuing a POST request to HAProxy with parameters), a RESTful interface would greatly improve the automation process (through Chef and Ansible)."
"The product does not have any new technologies."
"From my point of view, the configuration should be more friendly, perhaps with a Web interface."
"The deployment and configuration of HAProxy are not easy if we compare it with other solutions, such as F5."
"I'm unsure about the benchmark of those HTTP 2.0 requests on HAProxy."
"The basic clustering is not usable in our very specific setup. The clustering is mainly a configuration replication and is great in a case of active-passive usage. In the case of an active-active (or with more than two nodes) where the configuration is not fully identical, it cannot be used as-is."
"It needs proper HTTP/2 support."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The price is well worth it. HAProxy Enterprise Edition paid for itself within months, simply due to the resiliency it brings. It was a bit more expensive than we were originally interested in paying, but we are thankful we chose to go with HAProxy."
"The licensing fee for the solution is $690 per unit annually."
"It is free of cost."
"HAProxy is free software. There are optional paid products (support/appliances)."
"HAProxy is a free open-source solution."
"When it comes to pricing HAProxy is free."
"Very good value for the money. One of the simplest licensing schemes in this category of products."
"HAProxy is free open-source software."
