Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

Has accelerated AI experimentation and simplified transition from prototype to production at scale
The Karini team is responsive and continuously innovating. Scaling this responsiveness is critical to meet the rapid development of generative AI technologies. Karini’s Forward-Deployed Engineers provide instant feedback to Karini’s engineers, and the deployment of enhancements or novel developments continues to keep pace with the overall acceptance of our customers. I expect that demand will intensify quickly, and Karini’s capability to provide near-real-time enhancements is critical to our ability to meet that demand.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I like everything about the entire BPM that comes with the BPM suite."
"The way to create workflows is straightforward, which is one of the major benefits of the Camunda platform."
"I would definitely recommend the solution to anyone."
"Since day one, our goal was to build reusable components that can be used in other projects, and we recently did a discovery for one of our projects and we found that we could reuse 80 percent of what we had developed on the Camunda platform, and the microservices and the connectors were reusable and that really reduced the development effort drastically for that use case."
"The platform's approach to BPMN modeling is straightforward and versatile, making it easy to adopt and use effectively."
"We have seen that investing in a tool like Camunda is valuable, especially because it's an open-source product."
"The flexibility is great."
"Camunda Platform has a very good interface for workflow and business process design."
"The Karini team understands how to operationalize sophisticated GenAI business solutions at enterprise scale, allowing for rapid experimentation that does not require staffing up with data scientists, machine learning specialists, or AI practitioners."
"Karini GenAI allowed us to achieve our goals to solve a customer problem, deliver value, and provide a successful entry point into our GenAI journey."

Cons

"We have faced problems with the performance."
"The initial setup can be complex for business users."
"When addressing a complex and extensive process, the domain it belongs to, be it banking, healthcare, or HR, requires widespread access."
"The support definitely can be improved. Apart from that, the language should be extendable to other platforms. If I want to write, I'll run a different platform, like Python code on top of it, or COBOL code on top of it, and it should support those languages."
"The development team had a lot of issues at the start. Guaranteeing the execution times that it will work to is difficult."
"The latency of API could be decreased."
"Camunda could be improved by making it easier to modify a process. You can program it to follow a process, but it is difficult to modify the process when the application is in use. It could also be improved by making it easier to use the visual platform without needing to be informed on that. Sometimes, we programmers haven't used it in the past, and it's a bit difficult to learn it."
"At one point, we were subscribing to a monthly subscription, which I found quite pricey, especially since we were not fully utilizing Camunda."
"Karini is still expanding its list of features. As we add new features, additional connections and technologies around AI must be incorporated to ensure we stay current and continue to improve our platform."
"Scaling this responsiveness is critical to meet the rapid development of generative AI technologies."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Camunda Platform is an open-source product."
"It is less cost-prohibitive than other solutions on the market. This solution was in our price range."
"The evaluation of my customers on pricing is that it is reasonable."
"While the license isn't budget-friendly, careful consideration and calculated planning for a significant number of licenses can make it more cost-effective."
"Camunda is a cheaply priced product, making it one of its major USPs."
"I think Camunda BPM can improve their licensing costs. It isn't easy to find clients with Camunda BPM licenses mainly because it's quite expensive."
"We use a community version."
"Its price is decent. Everything is included in the license. The Community version is also good to start with. We are using the Community version."
