Nice interface, quick to deploy, and easy to expand
This is the first time I've used this kind of software. It was the only one we could apply to analyze with MISRA rules. At my new company, I tried to use Klocwork. I tried to use it, just once so I cannot compare it exactly with CodeSonar. I also have a plugin for my Visual Studio and I try to make it work. It's not easy, however, I don't think that we have this kind of functionality with CodeSonar. It can do some incremental analysis. However, since this feature is also available on CodeSonar, it would be a good idea to have a plugin on Visual Studio just to have a quick analysis.

Continuous secret monitoring has improved our incident response and protected exposed credentials
One area for improvement in GitGuardian Platform would be reducing false positives and making alert prioritization even more precise for larger environments; more customization around notifications and remediation workflows would also help teams avoid alert fatigue as the number of repositories grows. Regarding improvements needed for GitGuardian Platform, I would appreciate more flexibility in integrations, especially with different DevOps, ticketing, and security tools used across enterprise environments; while the UI is generally easy to use, better customization of dashboards and alert views would make it easier to manage a large number of repositories. I chose eight out of ten for GitGuardian Platform mainly because there is still room for improvement in enterprise integrations and customization; for larger environments, better alert prioritization, dashboard flexibility, and integration with more DevOps and security tools would strengthen the overall experience. The main areas we discussed primarily cover everything, but beyond those, I would appreciate more granular role-based controls and easier customization of alert workflows, especially for larger teams where different groups may need different levels of visibility and access.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I would suggest trying out automated tools along with CodeSonar on your project, and you will find out that CodeSonar reports many more defects compared to other static analysis tools, so this is a very important tool."
"What I like best about CodeSonar is that it has fantastic speed, analysis and configuration times."
"CodeSonar has helped our organization because it detects dead and nonusable parts of code to create a more optimized code."
"What I like best about CodeSonar is that it has fantastic speed, analysis and configuration times. Its detection of all runtime errors is also very good, though there were times it missed a few. The configuration of logs by CodeSonar is also very fantastic which I've not seen anywhere else. I also like the GUI interface of CodeSonar because it's very user friendly and the tool also shows very precise logs and results."
"There is nice functionality for code surfing and browsing."
"It has been able to scale."
"The most valuable feature of CodeSonar is the catching of dead code. It is helpful."
"CodeSonar’s most valuable feature is finding security threats."
"Previously, secrets would be leaked and nobody would ever hear about it, but now we actually have alerts and the opportunity to follow up with researchers to deal with these problems, turning something that had the potential to take an hour out of someone's day into a quick, easy, minimal, and more effective process."
"GitGuardian has pretty broad detection capabilities. It covers all of the types of secrets that we've been interested in... [Yet] The "detector" concept, which identifies particular categories or types of secrets, allows an organization to tweak and tailor the configuration for things that are specific to its environment. This is highly useful if you're particularly worried about a certain type of secret and it can help focus attention, as part of early remediation efforts."
"There is quite a lot to like. Its user interface is fantastic, and being able to sort the incidents by whether they are valid or for a certain repository or a certain user has been very beneficial in helping investigate what has been found."
"One thing I really like about it is the fact that we can add search words or specific payloads inside the tool, and GitGuardian will look into GitHub and alert us if any of these words is found in a repository... With this capability in the tool, we have good surveillance over our potential blind spots."
"The newest addition that we appreciate about GitGuardian Platform is the ability to create a custom detector, which we built and worked with the team, and that works very effectively."
"You can also assign tasks to specific teams or people to complete, such as assigning something to the "blue team" or saying that this person needs to do this, and that person needs to do that. That is a great feature because you can actually manage your team internally in GitGuardian."
"GitGuardian Platform helped us clean up our GitHub repositories of any type of secrets, even the useless ones, ensuring that if someone were to gain access, they wouldn't know what our API key or password looks like."
"The stability of the GitGuardian Platform is excellent."

Cons

"It was expensive."
"The MISRA guidelines were not appropriately reported and there were some flags or errors."
"In a future release, the solution should upgrade itself to the current trends and differentiate between the languages. If there are any classifications that can be set for these programming languages that would be helpful rather than having everything in the generic category."
"In terms of areas for improvement, the use case for CodeSonar was good, but compared to other tools, it seems CodeSonar isn't a sound static analysis tool, and this is a major con I've seen from it. Right now, in the market, people prefer sound static analysis tools, so I would have preferred if CodeSonar was developed into a sound static analysis tool formally, in terms of its algorithms, so then you can see it extensively used in the market because at the moment, here in India, only fifty to sixty customers use CodeSonar. If the product is developed into a sound static analysis tool, it could compete with Polyspace, and from its current fifty customers, that number could go up to a hundred."
"There could be a shared licensing model for the users."
"CodeSonar could improve by having better coding rules so we did not have to use another solution, such as MISRA C."
"It would be beneficial for the solution to include code standards and additional functionality for security."
"The scanning tool for core architecture could be improved."
"One area for improvement in GitGuardian Platform would be reducing false positives and making alert prioritization even more precise for larger environments; more customization around notifications and remediation workflows would also help teams avoid alert fatigue as the number of repositories grows."
"GitGuardian Platform could improve by providing a more user-friendly UI with tips or solutions."
"We'd like to request a new GitGuardian feature that automates user onboarding and access control for code repositories."
"There is room for improvement in its integration for bug-tracking. It should be more direct. They have invested a lot in user management, but they need to invest in integrations. That is a real lack."
"We have been somewhat confused by the dashboard at times."
"Automated Jira tickets would be fantastic. At the moment, I believe we have to go in and click to create a Jira ticket. It would be nice to automate."
"It could be easier. They have a CLI tool that engineers can run on their laptops, but getting engineers to install the tool is a manual process. I would like to see them have it integrated into one of those developer tools, e.g., VS Code or JetBrains, so developers don't have to think about it."
"It could be cheaper. When GitHub secrets monitoring solution goes to general access and general availability, GitGuardian might be in a little bit of trouble from the competition, and maybe then they might lower their prices."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution's price depends on the number of licenses needed and the source code for the project."
"Pricing is a bit costly."
"The application’s pricing is high compared to other tools."
"Our organization purchased a license to use the solution."
"You get what you pay for. It's one of the more expensive solutions, but it is very good, and the low false positive rate is a really appealing factor."
"It's fairly priced, as it performs a lot of analysis and is a valuable tool."
"I compared the solution to a couple of other solutions, and I think it is very competitively priced."
"The pricing is reasonable. GitGuardian is one of the most recent security tools we've adopted. When it came time to renew it, there was no doubt about it. It is licensed per developer, so it scales nicely with the number of repos that we have. We can create new repositories and break up work. It isn't scaling based on the amount of data it's consuming."
"It's not cheap, but it's not crazy expensive either."
"I am only aware of the base price. I do not know what happened with our purchasing team in discussions with GitGuardian. I was not privy to the overall contract, but in terms of the base MSRP price, I found it reasonable."
"We have seen a return on investment. The amount of time that we would have spent manually doing this definitely outpaces the cost of GitGuardian. It is saving us about $35,000 a year, so I would say the ROI is about $20,000 a year."
"It could be cheaper. When GitHub secrets monitoring solution goes to general access and general availability, GitGuardian might be in a little bit of trouble from the competition, and maybe then they might lower their prices. The GitGuardian solution is great. I'm just concerned that they're not GitHub."
