Enforces standardized setup procedures following Certified Validated Design (CVD) guidelines and offers greater flexibility and control over the system compared to traditional systems
The GUI setup follows the right setup, meaning we have to follow the CVDi.e. Certified Validated Design. Everything is clear, because you can build CI yourself, but without rules, it can be messy. With FlexPod, there are rules to follow, making it more standardized. This helps with troubleshooting and compatibility assessments, simplifying troubleshooting significantly. We also use FlexPod pre-validated architectures to validate the design. It is very, very important to us because we had a bad case in 2015 where separate items integrated poorly due to no version or firmware compatibility certification. Troubleshooting became a nightmare. So, standards are crucial for us, and everything entering production should be verified or at least documented for certification.

Offers comprehensive support and performance but initial deployment requires expertise
Oracle Private Cloud Appliance is a complete solution that includes built-in hypervisor management and Appliance Manager, and integrates with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. It simplifies the management of virtual machines, networking, compute, and storage, allowing me to create multiple virtual machines easily without logging into the storage system. It offers free licensing of Oracle Linux and Solaris, and provides high-performance capabilities through extreme performance storage options. Additionally, the product ensures comprehensive customer support.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Because the solution is now stable, we are saving about $100 million USD a year."
"FlexPod simplifies infrastructure from edge to core to cloud, and that is one of the main reasons we chose FlexPod."
"The product is uniquely valuable for the industry because we've had some experience with a competing solution from another storage vending solution, and it was not nearly as stable."
"The fact that all the components were integrated, and its simplicity to deploy."
"With the innovation of the AFF A800, its ease of management, and supportability, we have seen some performance improvement with the solution."
"A valuable feature of the FlexPod solution is that it is all one architecture and I can call one number and get support for Cisco and NetApp without having to jump through open TAC (Technical Assistance Center) cases and do multiple things to get issues addressed."
"With FlexPod, it is about the synergy of the server, the storage, and the whole management layer. Together, it is really about minimizing staff. You don't have to hire more people. You can work with the minimum level of resources and the availability is really good. We have had very little downtime."
"Their support is dynamite, and it's a lot easier to escalate with NetApp than with VMware."
"Oracle Private Cloud Appliance is a complete solution that includes built-in hypervisor management and Appliance Manager, and integrates with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure."
"Supports connection to most of network topology, such as VLAN and network segmentation."
"This is really a good consolidation play, so typically customers would have 10 or 15 servers out there, probably older, and what PCA does is give them a platform for consolidation."
"The main advantage of the PCA is licensing, for Oracle Database."
"You will find the high availability and License Team with Oracle very valuable."
"It has helped us to reduce Oracle licensing costs for database and applications."
"It's the most cost-effective solution for your mixed Oracle and non-Oracle workloads."
"The most valuable features include distinct storage within the Oracle PCA."

Cons

"Just continuing to improve upon speed would be my biggest area with room for improvement, the 10-gig backbone."
"Before the ONTAP 9 release, NetApp was cumbersome and not easy to manage."
"It could be more innovative."
"The service catalogue and gallery. I find it difficult to go through documentation, and I would like to see user cases we can refer to."
"FlexPod should focus more on automation. Integrating an automation tool with FlexPod would enable customers to leverage automation capabilities."
"There’s a lot of talk about security, but very little action."
"According to the product managers, there are some new products coming which will address some of our concerns around portability and compliance."
"The continued simplification will be a continued battle and evolution for both Cisco and NetApp, especially on the FlexPod product."
"Customer Service: Since the PCA is relative new, finding experienced resources is bit hard; need a lot of improvements in terms of documentation and technical details."
"For pricing, it is more expensive than the normal solution or the hyper-converged system."
"The overall engineered system is years behind other vendors, I'm thinking of VMware, OpenStack, Azure Stack."
"The deployment process of Oracle Private Cloud Appliance is complicated and requires significant knowledge for initial configuration."
"The initial setup was very complex."
"I think a tighter integration with external storage, the simplicity of having, let's say for example, EMC storage or Hitachi storage connected to PCA would have been a nice little added."
"Patching processing takes a long time. Only one compute node is patched at a time."
"In comparison to competitors like VMware, there's a perceived need for Oracle to enhance OVM, making it more flexible and user-friendly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We purchased the solution through CDW. They are a partner and knowledgeable."
"The main return on investment would be that instead of having to refresh all of our desktop hardware we have been able to go reimage existing machines and use those as thin clients, then also purchase new thin clients rather than buying actual hardware. It also reduces the overhead of having our technicians deploy those systems and maintain them."
"We fear high availability so we can't buy from different providers."
"Because the solution is now stable, we are saving about $100 million USD a year."
"We have absolutely seen ROI. We have saved between two to four million dollars on travel alone over the past 24 months."
"The solution has saved our customers' organization in terms of CapEx. E.g., with the cloud availability, it's turned into sort of a hybrid CapEx/OpEx model."
"FlexPod has saved data center costs, due to the fact that we reduced our footprint for storage in a big way. We went from three complete racks down to a 2U storage array for more than 300 terabytes of storage."
"We have a lease for approximately $10,000 USD per month."
"It is more expensive than the normal solution or the hyper-converged system."
"No licenses for the shipped software or firmware."
"If you have many Oracle products, such as databases, middleware, and apps, it will help you reduce Oracle app licences and support costs."
"It is relatively cost-effective."
