Support team has guided us through deploying virtual storage on legacy hardware and reducing operational costs
The reason I chose StarWind Virtual SAN for this particular scenario is really the features, the ease of use, and most importantly, the price. In my opinion, the best features StarWind Virtual SAN offers are easy integration with the system installed in the data center. The integration with my existing systems in the data center works well, especially with VMware, as we already have a big cluster in VMware, and the easy integration with that is helpful to solve some problems with the platform. StarWind Virtual SAN has positively impacted my organization by reducing OPEX costs. My OPEX costs have gone down as we reutilize some old servers, and this reduces the CAPEX of hardware in the data center.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The replication technology can move data faster than EMC MirrorView and requires less bandwidth. The Storage Virtualization technology is the most mature in the market, outside of IBM’s Storwize (which has a lot of compatibility issues, and EMC’s very expensive VPLEX solution); and it works."
"The most valuable feature is the interconnectivity, which allows me to use the system across my data centers and makes it easy to connect to other storage platforms."
"This solution allowed us to move from using standalone systems to having all our data center management in one place."
"In our implementations, HDS Storage Virtualization has helped in migrating data with the least amount of downtime, compared to other storage technologies."
"The fact that I can now count on a true failover solution is what is most appealing."
"StarWind Virtual SAN offers high availability and data resilience features to prevent data loss if hardware fails."
"We were able to build an entirely new SAN with much greater performance and more capacity for less than the cost of just upgrading our previous SAN, so the ROI was immediate."
"StarWind was a great price to performance ratio and it had a great support team behind it that helped me configure the solution and also size it to the customer's needs for them not to overpay for it and not get something that was not useful for them."
"We were able to leverage our previous hardware capital investment and converted our infrastructure to use StarWind VSAN; the migration process was simple, and afterwards, we had a highly reliable SAN system."
"The most valuable feature is the reliable storage replication, which enables me to create a robust infrastructure to run our business."
"We like their high availability. It reduces the downtime for our entire organization's environment."
"I've been really impressed with it so far. I think it's pretty great, actually. It does exactly what we need it to do, and it does it well, so I would recommend it. Plus, the support has been very good."

Cons

"HDS reaches a ceiling depending on model. The G200 cannot transition to G400, the G400 can transition to G600 but cannot transition to G800, which is the top-end model."
"An area for improvement would be technical support."
"An update to its technology would be good. The G Series has been around for more than five years and HDS seriously needs to ramp up, since the competition has better performance at a lower cost with better features and functionalities. For example, it needs redirect on write Snapshot, preconfigured storage tiering with better IOPS, built-in deduplication technology on hybrid disk, etc."
"An area for improvement would be technical support. In the next release, I would like to see more features added to make this a more complete solution."
"We prefer solutions other than HDS due to better post sales support, updates, ease of use, flexibility, etc."
"The console is something that I feel could be improved."
"A better overall view of the different deployments could be beneficial, although this is difficult due to how flexible the solution is."
"If it's possible to make a driver/solution that does not make use of the iSCSI targets of Windows, that would be great. I don't know if that's possible, however, it could make the configuration a little easier."
"I wish there was online support because email return takes a long time and a faster solution should be found."
"There should be some kind of active monitoring connected to StarWind vSAN, so you will be able to act when needed."
"That limited feedback in the management GUI is the main area where I would like to see StarWind Virtual SAN get better."
"The software could benefit from more tooling to help with initial deployment."
"The configuration can a bit cumbersome."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"I would suggest that you download the free version, deploy in your lab, and play with it."
"The cost seems a bit steep, and I wish it was less expensive."
"The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
"The Price/Performance ratio for this solution is outstanding!"
"Licensing is easy and the whole package is cost-effective."
"We are happy with the price."
"There are two tiers of support and in my opinion, support is worth the cost."
"Cost is affordable and licensing is smooth."
