Data insights have transformed reporting speed and support faster, informed decisions
IBM Cognos makes it simple to create visually appealing products, and we are able to run about 1,000 reports on a daily basis while another 1,000 are run through the scheduler built into IBM Cognos Analytics. It offers triggering through the scheduler, which we use to confirm the completion of other processes needed to be available before the job is scheduled to run, allowing us to make data-driven decisions easily. Some of the best features that IBM Cognos offers are enterprise reporting, which enables us to create, customize, and run reports on sales trends, consumer sentiment, and many more; dashboard creation; and data exploration and analysis. We are able to use the drag and drop feature to create ad-hoc visualizations. Additionally, I find the AI-powered natural language query feature for data analysis and dashboard input to be very useful for a non-technical person to put queries around the spreadsheets data to get a quick answer. Building insights for accurate decision-making has been great. Moreover, we can package reports with data-backed insights for stakeholders in PDF and Excel format to support business ad-hoc cases, forecasting, and strategic recommendations on relevant tasks. Of all those features, the visual graphs, predictive analytics, and data cleansing feature makes the biggest difference for my team. IBM Cognos is deployed in my organization using a hybrid cloud setup with Amazon Web Services as our cloud provider.

Custom cohort dashboards have transformed customer tracking but still need richer built‑in visuals
From my perspective, adding more custom visualizations as inbuilt features would be greatly beneficial for developers and other teams. For specific visualizations, we currently need to use Python and JavaScript combinations to create great visualizations such as cohort analysis. If these visualizations were added by default to Mode Enterprise, it would be beneficial for all of us. There are common visualizations that are not currently in Mode Enterprise but should be added. There are advantages and disadvantages to the current state. The advantages mainly include the ability to combine all datasets, which definitely reduces time. Because Python and JavaScript are supported, we can develop cohort dashboards, which many other BI tools do not support. Mode Enterprise supports cohort dashboards, which is a significant advantage.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I love the new user interface! Finally, Cognos BI has a new face."
"The upgraded visualizations and more user-friendly interface have increased the acceptance rate of this tool."
"Excellent new functionality."
"The entire process can be created in the IBM tool from source, to reporting, to administration."
"It is a very complete solution: versatile, flexible, robust, and scalable."
"The report designer, Report Studio, is incredibly versatile and easy to use."
"A positive feature is Report Studio, where we create beautiful, complex reports."
"The correlation analysis is excellent. It's one of the best that I have used to date."
"Mode Enterprise positively impacted my organization with its clean visualization and slightly faster response times."
"I have used many other BI tools, but when I compare other BI tools with Mode Enterprise, I find it more interesting because it supports Amazon Redshift and cloud-related technology as well as some static-related technology, and it also supports customization through coding with JavaScript and Python."
"Mode Enterprise has positively impacted my organization by making data analysis and reporting much faster."
"The most important feature of the solution is the ability to run Python-based scripts."
"The solution is simple for people from a viewing perspective, not a coding perspective."
"The most valuable feature I would say is the flexibility in editing."
"The tool helps to catch results and review them."

Cons

"I believe IBM Cognos can be improved by addressing its limited real-time data connectivity, as well as enhancing the endpoint experience and mobility, which currently is not satisfactory due to limited data blending."
"It is struggling to compete with the front-end ease of use and visual appeal of QlikView and Tableau."
"Complex to learn and use. Need technical team to build solutions."
"It is very expensive… You have to determine if the complexity of software you are getting is worth the price you are paying; how many bells and whistles do you need for what price."
"Every product on the market can be improved, but I would like IBM to stop trying to compete with the smaller players in the market, rushing out versions that nobody wants to migrate to because the version seems unstable."
"They should provide improved visual reporting."
"I would give technical support a rating of 4/10. IBM technical support should be improved and their turn-around time should be reduced."
"Cognos can improve in some database basic connections (should be easier), mainly migrations in version 7.x to 8.x 10.x."
"Mode Enterprise can be improved by reducing the cost, as I think the enterprise version is much costlier."
"The solution could run faster."
"I think in terms of User Interface, I would say it can be better."
"Mode Analytics needs to improve the overall user experience."
"From my perspective, adding more custom visualizations as inbuilt features would be greatly beneficial for developers and other teams."
"The data visualization is cumbersome in Mode Analytics. I want the solution to add a map that has an easy interface. The UI is slow sometimes."
"When I talk about improving Mode Enterprise, I would specifically like to address the need for easier drag-and-drop report creation, better self-service analysis for non-SQL queries, and improved sharing collaboration."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"My company uses IBM Cognos with another IBM product, so I think only one license is used."
"It is pretty expensive."
"IBM Cognos offers competitive pricing similar to other BI vendors in the market."
"The licensing costs are a little bit higher for IBM Cognos. I don't think there is any additional cost apart from the licensing charges."
"It's more expensive than similar solutions like Tableau and Power BI."
"Cognos is super expensive compared to Tableau ($70/month) and Power BI ($20/month) — I think Cognos is roughly $200 a month."
"IBM Cognos is priced reasonable. However, it is more expensive than Power BI and Tableau."
"The solution is affordable."
"Mode Analytics is cheap compared to other tools."
"My decision-maker found the pricing expensive, but it is okay for me."
"The pricing is per user."
