The database setup is a pain initially, but once it's done everything works fine.

Unified semantic layer has driven informed credit risk decisions and real-time analytical insight
Performance-related issues are a concern, as in multiple reports I have seen, some reports were poorly performing. We can focus on implementation of performance so that reports are delivered within seconds. The user interface and self-service experience can be improved through modernization of the UI, addressing self-service limitations, and integrating with mobile. Technical and administrative complexities can also be addressed. Complexities such as system configuration require attention. In the initial setup of Oracle OBIEE, there are multiple things starting from infrastructure provisioning, database schemas, and WebLogic server installations. However, the RPD, the semantic layer, is the steepest hurdle. Security integration, integrating with LDAP or Active Directory, is rarely plug and play and requires deep knowledge of WebLogic. Deep knowledge is necessary when starting with the initial setup of Oracle OBIEE. Other dependencies include Java middleware and client tools. Since Oracle OBIEE deals with huge data, report performance is the biggest concern. The out-of-the-box setup is rarely optimized, so we need to manually check configuration files, such as nqsconfig.ini file settings. For recommendations in Oracle OBIEE, from what I have seen, we work with star schemas in the RPD. I always aim for the star schema in the business model, even if the physical source is normalized. This approach will impact the performance, speed of the data, and accuracy. Oracle OBIEE could improve to allow other schemas as well. Performance is a major area for improvement, and they should work on aggregating the persistence and improve the persistence wizard where we implement aggregations. Caching features have been given, including event polling tables where we can do purging and seeding, but the main focus should be with respect to schema designs.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"This product offers a wide range of corporate performance management tools for powerful financial consolidation, planning and reporting."
"Khalix is a simple tool that builds on existing data sources to develop solutions in forecasting, planning and consolidation needs."
"Well certainly this product has helped many finance users in the organization as this product enables them to see the numbers for any cost center and business unit and also get a consolidated view of group level numbers."
"This tool is mainly used for forecasting, and it will, for sure, help all the organizations that need data/reports on expenses and headcount forecasting."
"The solution is easy to use and very flexible."
"From my experience, OBIEE is the best solution."
"The centralized metadata model component is most valuable."
"All the dashboards, iPad support and other features have been great for us, and we totally rely on it."
"It's so easy for us to see everything on a single dashboard, instead of looking for the information, and then compiling it in some sort of spreadsheet."
"It is easy to use...I rate the scalability of the solution a nine out of ten."
"The most valuable feature is the reporting."
"It empowers users to perform ad hoc analyses themselves rather than having to go to IT or somewhere else."

Cons

"If you compare it with Oracle then Longview isn't that user friendly."
"Web based reporting can have better user interface and functions."
"The original cost is set to use enterprise wide but the users growth is too slow to justify the cost. That's one of the reasons we stopped using this tool."
"The initial set up was complex and painful, both with respect to database setup and the execution script."
"Even though we have a feature to enable the physical query to be seen in the log, in case of any issues, it is challenging to debug and see or identify where is the issue."
"I would like to see a little more flexibility in the configuration."
"The product does not provide an automatic system maintenance service, thus log files continue to be collected on the disk up until it is full and it causes the whole platform stop."
"It has very good features but it is missing going quickly into the cloud, and virtualization - unlike other vendors."
"Immediate shutdown for services may crash the system."
"Certainly the look and feel of the user interface is something should be improved further."
"When evaluating cost, Tableau and Power BI are less costly compared to Oracle OBIEE, which is an important consideration when assessing cost-effectiveness and return on investment."
"It could be more user-friendly. For example, the RPD layer could be more straightforward. From a user's point of view, the visualization, especially the graphs, are not as attractive when compared to other tools like QlikView and Qlik Sense."
