Improved project scheduling has maximized resource utilization and has reduced delays
I think the licensing structure presents a significant area for improvement. The full features are not offered on the standard E4 license. This becomes problematic when distributing the project plan. I can export the plan as Excel and CSV files, but then I lose all the rich features, including dependency mapping. To recreate all that functionality without proper licensing is challenging. Microsoft Project offers a light version available for free, but when I try to distribute a project plan, it requires separate licensing. Microsoft Project Central used to be more of an enterprise product. Microsoft Project currently focuses on very low-level task management, and it could do much more. I do not see significant advancement happening because there is confusion about where Microsoft Project is heading. I believe Microsoft should bundle the license with Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This approach would result in more people using Microsoft Project. That is my opinion on how to improve adoption and the product offering.

Consistent capital project workflows have improved collaboration and real-time data use
In my opinion, the best features of Trimble Project Management are that it is quite good as a database and process, and it has been working well for us. The big challenge is on the reporting side; it does not provide great dashboards and that type of functionality. Using Trimble Project Management has made our project efficiency more efficient than not having it. It is a project management information system, so it is very important to have for our organization. Trimble Project Management's real-time data integration has been a valuable feature; we have a data warehouse that it sends information to, and we use Tableau to create dashboards.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Microsoft Project is one of the only solutions you can use in just about any industry."
"Dependencies (not typically effectively used in "Agile" techniques) allow understanding of actual project status and challenges."
"We use Microsoft Project for its timeline and task management capabilities. The primary advantage is the easy application of tasks in sequence, confirming dependencies, and establishing relationships between tasks. It simplifies handling conditions, significant dates, and dependencies between various tasks."
"The most valuable feature of the solution stems from the fact that the product's GUI is very good...The product's scalability is good."
"It's an easy solution to set up."
"The most valuable feature is probably the Kanban diagram. People are familiar with the Kanban tools. When they do their scrum meetings, they have that Kanban board where you can see the different tiles for all the queries and move them from left to right. IT is familiar with that because, for development, most of the tools have that capability. It could also be more graphical, like Asana."
"The scheduling part of Microsoft Project is easy; if you change one of the dates, the rest of the dates automatically get changed based on the dependency."
"The most valuable features of Microsoft Project are the availability of being online and within Teams; my entire team can use it and see it, versus the full Microsoft Projects, such as Project Professional, where you need to have a license."
"Using Trimble Project Management has made our project efficiency more efficient than not having it."

Cons

"I find the setup a little bit cumbersome."
"Planview FLEX licensing gives us a central repository where all the projects are stored so you can check the finances, resources, etc. It's quite useful to have everything connected. We don't have that for Microsoft Project. It's disconnected. The reporting capabilities could also be better, especially with finance and resources. Everybody complains about reports. That's why we need another tool."
"I find that MS Project has limited control in comparison to other solutions in the same sphere."
"The tool's deployment is complex. Integration and automation also need to be improved."
"It is positioned at the more high end. Sometimes it's more complicated than we need."
"Its user experience can be improved while configuring it. Its reporting can also be better."
"We'd like the solution to have better integration with other third-party and open-source solutions."
"When moving resources between projects, it could be a bit more clear."
"The reporting does exist, but it is not great."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is expensive."
"The licensing model is somewhat complex."
"It probably was $30 per license on a monthly basis. There is no additional fee."
"We purchase perpetual licenses due to the high cost of subscriptions, which are about 1,000 Australian dollars."
"The cost for an on-premises-based license is a one-time fee, and the cloud-based is an annual payment plan."
"The solution has a decent annual license subscription cost, which is not high."
"It gets expensive when having to add all of the plugins and everything that you need."
"The pricing is based on a licensing model and is reasonable."
