Traffic management has reduced incidents and has provided faster, more controlled releases
While our overall experience with NGINX API Gateway has been positive, there are a few areas where I feel it could be improved. One is an easy centralized management UI. A lot of advanced configuration is still heavily file-based and engineering-driven, so for larger enterprise environments, a modern, intuitive centralized management dashboard would help operational teams significantly. More built-in API lifecycle management features would also be helpful. Compared to some enterprise API management platforms, features such as developer portals, API monetization, and version lifecycle management are not as comprehensive out-of-the-box. Configuration complexity at scale is another concern. As an environment grows, managing large configuration files across many services can become difficult. We handle this through automations and templating, but it still requires an experienced engineer. The learning curve for advanced tuning also presents challenges. The basic setup is straightforward, but optimizing performance, caching, and traffic strategies for higher traffic requires deep expertise. In our case, none of these are blockers, but improving these areas would make the platform even more enterprise-friendly and easier to operate at a very large scale. A few additional improvements come to mind regarding NGINX API Gateway. One area is documentation for advanced enterprise use cases. The basic setup documentation is quite good, but when dealing with complex traffic routing, multi-region deployments, advanced caching strategies, or large-scale Kubernetes integrations, teams often need to rely heavily on community forums and internal experimentations. More real-world architecture examples and enterprise deployment patterns would be very helpful. Support response quality can also vary depending on the complexity of the issue. For standard operational problems, support is generally responsive, but for highly specific performance tuning or advanced configuration challenges, resolution sometimes requires deep internal troubleshooting from the engineering team. Another improvement area is operational visibility. While integration with monitoring tools works well, having more built-in dashboards for traffic analytics, latency trends, upstream health, and API usage would reduce dependency on external observability platforms. Finally, although performance is excellent, onboarding newer engineers can take some time because advanced NGINX API Gateway configurations and migration patterns require fairly strong infrastructure knowledge. More guidance, templates, automation recommendations, and best-practice deployment blueprints would make adoption easier for a growing team.

In my opinion, OPNsense could improve by incorporating either an open side of wireless management or a way that you can also manage your interconnected devices. You could easily have SNMP, Simple Network Management Protocol, incorporated in it so that you can easily manage the devices and easily get the information about the devices that you are managing. Additionally, the inclusion of Pi-hole would allow you to create an ad-free network instead of adding it on a separate device. I would prefer that incorporated into OPNsense, or if it is there, I would appreciate guidance on how to use it.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We do not face any lags."
"We use it for container deployment, mostly for Kubernetes, and sometimes we also use it for testing purposes as I am using it for my own personal learning purposes."
"API routing is the most valuable feature."
"NGINX API Gateway has been a reliable and high-performance platform for our organization, providing an excellent balance between performance, flexibility, and operational efficiency while handling large API traffic very well and remaining lightweight and relatively cost-effective compared to some heavyweight enterprise solutions."
"The best features of NGINX API Gateway are the authentication aspects, since it adds a barrier to your application before requests hit the main service, and also the load balancing aspects where it handles system downtimes by routing requests to the next available service."
"It's easy to install, and the performance is good."
"I moved to OPNsense because it's more secure and more reliable."
"I find everything valuable in OPNsense; the configuration and reporting aspects are what we require, reporting on user access and data consumed is fascinating in OPNsense, and the configuration offers a clear idea of everything that I have configured in DHCP."
"For the initial setup of OPNsense, I find that it is very simple."
"The system in general is quite flexible."
"It has firewall and VPN capabilities, which are very valuable features."
"Its pricing is unbeatable in comparison to other firewalls."
"OPNsense is very stable, easy to upgrade, and maintain."
"Based on my experience, the main benefits OPNsense provides for me are due to the limitation in getting financials to implement the most marketable solutions available in the market, which pushed me to find other open-source-related or cheaper solutions, and that is how I came upon OPNsense and pfSense, but OPNsense was the choice in this decision, providing a simple but also effective solution on a low budget."

Cons

"I believe NGINX API Gateway could improve by offering token authentication in the normal version instead of only in NGINX Plus, as it currently requires migration to enterprise for that feature."
"It could be more secure because security is always a problem."
"The product must improve its security features."
"While our overall experience with NGINX API Gateway has been positive, there are a few areas where I feel it could be improved."
"The UI could be more attractive."
"We did not like the fact that you have to configure everything with the graphic user interface. We have used other firewalls, such as FortiGate, that you can configure via code. OPNsense is not easy to integrate. When you are deploying via GitHub or another source repository, this is not possible. That's one thing we didn't like much."
"I would like to see better SD-WAN performance."
"The solution can't compete with next-generation firewalls."
"The reporting part could be better."
"The interface of the solution is an area with shortcomings."
"The feature that I would like to see in the next release, I think, would be to improve the VPN (Virtual Private Network) selection."
"OPNsense could improve by making the configuration more web-based rather than shell or command-line-based."
"On the customer-side, because I'm a small business, I need a cheaper or free solution option."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We are using the open-source version."
"We are using the open source version, so there is no cost involved."
"The solution is not expensive."
"OPNsense is open source software so at this time it is free for us to use."
"It's not expensive."
"There are no licensing costs for OPNsence."
"As an appliance, it's in the medium price range."
"We are using the paid version."
"We are not paying any licensing fees. OPNsense is completely free for us."
"I've used the free version. My computer with two network cards at home allows me to try as many different software options as I want. I did pay for the license, but it was for the Zenarmor license, which is the packet inspection tool. They use AI for packet inspection, which integrates with OPNsense and pfSense."
