Collaboration has improved through simplified document access and controlled sharing
SharePoint is definitely used to keep a record of our files and data. The capability is quite good because it is time-saving. I have used it only four or five times, but it has been very helpful to keep all my information in a consolidated manner. The search feature is one of the most beneficial factors that we use to filter out the latest data or the latest file as per our convenience and use case. When you have a large repository, this feature is particularly valuable. Role-based access control has been helpful while developing the knowledge platform. The roles were defined clearly, which made it easy for the four or five of us to work simultaneously and collaborate on our project in a similar manner.

The gaps in the API are filled by our own R+D and the publish mechanism is very reliable.
The API is awful. We needed to develop a batch load tool in order to send automated events to Tibber API. The current API version is not well documented, i.e. the current version of the API in the software doesn't correspond to the web-documented API. We had to imagine parameters and names. We had difficulty making it all work, as the login/SSO mechanism was not properly explained so that we could perform external logins to the API and use their features.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"SharePoint is a big product with many features including customization flexibilities."
"Microsoft Office 365 has provided us many ways to share documents across a diversity of platforms with a diversity of people (both inside and outside our company)."
"It's very high, I can't disclose exact figures, but it's a seven-figure number."
"When properly implemented and users are adequately trained, SharePoint can take the place of network file shares for most types of use cases."
"There are a lot of valuable features (e.g., ease of use, collaboration, integration with LDAP, security, accessibility, stability, etc.)."
"The most valuable facet of SharePoint is the content, the ideas, all the information, all in one content management system."
"Using this product, one can benefit from OOB features in regards to content and document management, and it provides a single platform where multiple applications can be integrated under one roof."
"SharePoint’s most valuable feature is its use for community building, as it turns large scores of people into a more cohesive group by creating a central working environment for documents, conversations, knowledge sharing, processes, tasks and content."
"Typically the classical ROI is about seven months from full deployment, but there are a lot of benefits that we can't measure with this metric, like more dissemination of knowledge, fast internal expert finding, less internal emails, less waste of time, and better employee engagement."
"The gaps in the API are filled by our own R+D and the publish mechanism is very reliable."

Cons

"Special implementation and development should be easy."
"Stability, even after deployment three months ago, still seems to be an issue."
"Technical support rates a 3.5/5."
"The technical support level is practically nil."
"It would be nice if the editing and setting up of SharePoint were more user-friendly, so I do not have to have an expert to deal with it."
"SharePoint has workflow built into the software however it is very simplistic."
"The way to change the version of the files in SharePoint should be improved. The method of synchronizing files from local to the cloud can also use improvement."
"Document libraries and document management could be improved."
"The API is awful."
"More customizable features, particularly in mobile app; better preview of document and images stored in other cloud services (like Google Drive, Dropbox and so on)."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The platform has medium pricing."
"The licensing model for SharePoint Online is based on per user, and it is monthly. The price of the solution overall is good."
"It comes bundled with the Microsoft 365 pricing plans."
"The replacement costs for it are cheaper if you use only SharePoint."
"As usual, Microsoft’s licensing structures don’t really seem to fit the needs of their products. This leads to always paying for a project you will never use fully or always be adding to."
"SharePoint is included with our Microsoft license."
"The data classification and search elements are cheap."
"The product is reasonably priced."

Jive vs Sharepoint vs Drupal Commons
At Mediacurrent we often get requests to compare Drupal to other platforms used for intranet sites and social business platforms (like https://dev.twitter.com/ for example). This is often referred to as “Social Business Software”, which has grown in popularity in recent years. I decided to do a…
