Secure access has transformed our audits and weekend operations run smoothly
StrongDM does not support multi-port and distributed clusters, as the raw TCP resource type is strictly single-port and cannot handle protocols requiring multiple concurrent ports or distributed brokers like Kafka. Third-party client compatibility is another area for improvement, as StrongDM is designed to work with the standard Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection on Windows but may not fully support alternative RDP clients like the Windows Store Remote Desktop.Additionally, StrongDM has limited MFA and passwordless options, relying heavily on time-based one-time passwords (OTP) or Duo, lacking support for true passwordless setups like biometrics or hardware YubiKeys, and it does not support per-session MFA. These are the drawbacks that need improvement for StrongDM.

Secure management of sensitive servers and seamless applications with direct linking
The credential injection feature is highly valued, particularly for RDP sessions. A majority of customers use it for RDP, and a couple for Linux servers. The broader capabilities, including access to multiple systems, web-based applications, and clustering, have never posed an issue. The threat analytics aspect is also a robust feature that analyzes all pertinent information.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The best features in StrongDM are that it is the easiest product in the market for this situation with easy access."
"By adopting StrongDM, we have achieved benefits such as eliminating our weekend outages, streamlining ongoing on-call workflows, enabling seamless migration with POC transitions directly into production with minimal effort, allowing our engineers to use their preferred SQL clients like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Workbench, and facilitating compliance through detailed session logs and query capture for SOC 2 and ISO audits."
"We primarily used StrongDM for access to resources on private networks like EC2 machines, Kubernetes clusters, and various databases."
"The best features in StrongDM are the password rotation capabilities, which I think are pretty cool, and also how you can literally log in to any of the privileged servers through a single platform."
"All of the logging is handled for us, including for auditing purposes. Looking through the audit logs is not a painful experience."
"I absolutely would say that the best features of StrongDM and what I appreciate about the solution is that time to onboard is absolutely minimal."
"StrongDM has positively impacted my organization by ensuring that every developer has access to cloud resources, which are audited by the organization, allowing us to keep track of who accesses what and control the access."
"Since using StrongDM, I estimate around a 60% reduction in effort compared to other PAM tools."
"It will provide us with more security."
"The technical support has be an essential part of our deployment."
"Stability is solid as a rock."
"It reduces the viral attacks on my website. It also allows certain users access to see what happens daily."
"The best features are the comprehensive coverage of the required features for the PAM solution like a credential vault, a session recording, an endpoint agent, security analytics."
"CA PAM is working well for us."
"One of the most valuable items is the load balancing feature."
"Monitoring privileged users’ actions is valuable because of the high level of trust and wide-ranging access insiders typically enjoy."

Cons

"I think the stability of StrongDM is about four to five due to the occasional crashes that I mentioned."
"Additionally, StrongDM has limited MFA and passwordless options, relying heavily on time-based one-time passwords (OTP) or Duo, lacking support for true passwordless setups like biometrics or hardware YubiKeys, and it does not support per-session MFA."
"I think StrongDM could improve by focusing more on network device management by allowing the addition of PAM for network devices, managing legacy network equipment, or helping to initiate enterprise onboarding where a lot of complex environments and initial setup are required."
"Integration, however, is something which admins configure with StrongDM, and in that area, it can be improved."
"We've had a few issues with the stability of this product in the past."
"I believe StrongDM can improve its initial setup and onboarding experience for larger enterprise environments like Scania, where we have a lot of processes."
"I rate the stability of the product five out of ten because crashes sometimes happen when we are working on it."
"It would be beneficial to have better control and alignment between frequent updates and improved communication regarding possible negative effects on existing customer bases."
"Broadcom has neglected product development since acquiring Symantec, and nothing major has been added to PAM."
"I think the management console could be improved."
"Reporting. It's difficult to locate the reports, there are limits on what reports can be run from the GUI, and the report formats are lacking."
"The first setup was complex. The implementation, to me, was very bad."
"It'd be great if you just stuck in your PIV card and Windows popped up, asked you for your password. You typed it in, then it remembered your credentials."
"We had some issues with the load balancing feature when configured for clustering."
"Be prepared to call tech support a lot because the documentation is almost worthless."
"I believe continued expansion of integration to multiple systems including SSO and SAML technologies will provide a more-expansive, enterprise view of access orchestration, which will in turn strengthen the security of the environment."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing is per user per month."
"The licensing is simple and scalable."
"Pricing is fair compared to other top vendors."
"Appliances are relatively cheap, don’t skimp. Make sure you have redundancy, high availability, and enough appliances to manage the concurrent workload."
"Cost-wise, CA was better compared to others in the market. "
"I would prefer better licensing options for the 20-100 users we have at a given time."
"Don’t go with an agent model. Don’t go with a model that has you buying a thousand different parts. Go with PAM that gives you everything, or you’ll just be paying costs of implementing another tool that PAM would have just given you up front."
"It is reasonably priced."
"They offer per-device, per-user, or monthly and yearly licensing models."
