The flexibility that we have with the JSONB functionality allowed us to get data into the system, build the POC, get it in front of people, and then as we find needs for things to be more normally normalized, we can go back and make those changes.

Automatic patching and backups have a huge impact on my database management strategy—we have an operations team of two people and do not have time to handle database maintenance manually, so we chose platform-as-a-service for this reason.

Automatic patching and backups have saved us time; anything automatic is a blessing—it allows us to be hands-off, and the reliability has been very good with it.

By moving to the cloud, we shifted costs from OpEx to CapEx, and we can spread each cost according to each client, and when we use a specific database, we can tag and monitor the cost of each resource to understand the budget.

Coming from a traditional Oracle Exadata setup, all queries will run faster because Oracle has that optimization layer in between which optimizes it for you, which is why you pay a lot of money for that. When you come to Azure Database for PostgreSQL, that layer is gone.

Azure Database for PostgreSQL is already a strong managed service, but the user experience could be improved further through simpler cost and performance optimization guidance, more detailed monitoring and troubleshooting insights, and easy configuration management.

I believe Azure Database for PostgreSQL can be improved by allowing features that are only enabled or configured during creation to be configurable without redeploying the entire database, a process which can impact our customers if it involves an application outage.

In terms of improvement for Azure Database for PostgreSQL, the native applications can be enhanced, as we can use different tools to connect the database, but I believe the browser on the Azure portal can be made more user-friendly.
