Performance testing has become central and reporting has provided clear insights for our teams
We do have command prompt related or CLI functionality with Apache JMeter, so it is easier. However, since it is open source, much work has not been put into the GUI part. The GUI could definitely be enhanced. One drawback which I can see when I compare it with other tools is the amount of cache that it uses, the memory that it uses. It becomes very difficult to work with when we have a lot of requests that need to be processed. Anything more than 10,000 requests becomes a bit of an unfavorable task when using Apache JMeter altogether. Otherwise, it does help anyone who is starting off with performance testing.

Open-source and flexible but needs client-side scripting
It's an open-source tool and supports a lot of plugins and custom code, which allows integration with other tools like Azure and AWS. Also, the APIs tested with SoapUI can be directly used, avoiding the need to create collections like in Postman. The client-side scripting, if incorporated, would provide a complete solution for performance tests. It can handle user distribution and transaction throughput distribution effectively.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Apache JMeter is completely free as it is open-source, providing cost-effective customization options."
"Very user-friendly and easy to use."
"Scripting with the solution is good."
"The scripting ability is most valuable. It is easy to use. There is a UI, and you can go in there and figure those things out. After you've got a good set of tests, you basically have a scripted document that you can grab and execute in a pipeline. It is pretty quick to set up, and you can scale it and version control it."
"JMeter lets us generate virtual users and T-load, per our requirements, and it's easy to configure and adjust the virtual users according to the DPS we want to achieve."
"I appreciate JMeter's simplicity and power for performance testing."
"We really appreciate that the solution comes with a live community, which continuously provided plugins and support protocols."
"The ability to create a large number of user loads has been very helpful for us."
"ReadyAPI automation can help us validate the functionality of most web services, allowing us to find out the exact number of defects before deployment to the user interface."
"It is a very good and handy product, there are so many features, and it is getting more popular day by day."
"It has helped improve productivity and functionality."
"It's an open-source tool and supports a lot of plugins and custom code, which allows integration with other tools like Azure and AWS."
"The performance and reporting of this solution have been its most valuable features."
"We find the product to be scalable."
"he initial deployment process is easy."
"It's like a centralized interface that allows us to increase the quality of our APIs."

Cons

"There could be improvements in terms of memory utilization. We are going to migrate away from JMeter in the near future."
"It does not support recording SSL."
"I think it has some proxy-based dependencies which require specific proxies to be set up or disabled, which causes problems when we are working in certain specific environments that have a proxy setup."
"JMeter's reporting is extremely rudimentary. The fundamental reporting mechanisms need to be drastically improved. It doesn't utilize an automatic session management mechanism or methods other tools use like parsing cookies and variables. Everything needs to be done manually. There's no automation."
"There are issues when tests are stopped with large number of concurrent users. Test is not stopped as expected."
"They can improve it a little bit in terms of distribution load testing. We struggled with it during the distribution."
"The solution needs to improve reporting. Currently, there is not enough automation involved with the feature. For example, there should be an automatic way of saving reports."
"When you run tests with JMeter, it generates test version five, which is extremely large."
"We need some time to understand and configure the solution."
"The solution’s interface could be improved."
"This solution could be improved by offering artificial AI testing in addition to API testing. For example, we would like to have machine learning testing because when test applications, manual work could be completed automatically using this functionality."
"The client-side scripting mostly isn't needed for performance testing, however, if implemented, it would enhance the tool."
"I'd not sure if they have the same level of documentation for performance and security testing."
"I want the solution to be able to monitor Apache Kafka activity as well."
"It is very slow sometimes. If they could improve its performance, it would be really great for the users."
"This is an area for improvement with the tool. We unnecessarily use JMeter for some website testing, which we would like to avoid by introducing this tool for API and load testing because it provides load testing features."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We use the open source version."
"Since we are using an outsourced solution, it is not paid for by our company."
"Apache JMeter is far less expensive than HP Performance Center."
"Apache JMeter is a free tool."
"No licensing is required as it is a free, open-source tool."
"I switched to Apache because it is free. Other tools are much too expensive and can cost up to $50,000 a year if you are looking at commercial options."
"Everything is included, and there are no additional costs."
"Apache JMeter is an open-source solution, so it's free to use."
"ReadyAPI Performance’s pricing is reasonable."
"This solution operates on a licence basis and the usage and cost varies according to the use case. It is more expensive if you include access to the learning center. On average it costs approximately 800 Euros."
"We find the cost to be affordable."
