Good automation, statistics gathering, and reporting, with helpful technical support
The initial setup is simple. It took a few weeks to set up and test, before going live. There is some maintenance required. We have to allocate the storage often. We have a team within App Ux, the vendor, who supports us, and the engineering team within the F5M security team manages that.

Micro segmentation has strengthened zero trust security and isolates production from test environments
The advantages of VMware NSX include its micro-segmentation for internal security at the firewall and VM levels, which is very powerful and helps us comply with complete Zero Trust security models. We are able to achieve this and configure network level virtualization with no dependency on VLANs. Micro-segmentation helps improve our security significantly. We are not totally dependent upon our physical upfront firewall, and it makes sense to configure everything using VMware NSX, leading to multiple improvements in our organization. We moved from traditional networking such as VLANs from the firewall and switches to VMware NSX segmentation. We achieve one firewall per VLAN and can stop lateral movement such as ransomware control. The Zero Trust model is the main functionality and architecture it offers, allowing application isolation, such as having a separate production and test environment. Consistent networking and security policies across different environments have a major and very positive impact on our business operations, allowing us to achieve the security posture we want with compliance and regulations.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"If you are a heavy user of eCommerce services, use cloud-based solutions, and you would like a central point with a single pane of glass to get any kind of statistics or visibility around your applications, this solution is a good tool."
"The features that I have found to be the most valuable are the collecting of statistics, reporting, and implementing changes to particular environments on a scheduled basis with no manual intervention."
"NSX is good in managing security or controlling the security and the access control for each single VM."
"Though I haven't been working a lot on VMware NSX, it's good to have. What I like the most about it is that its console is good, and it doesn't take a lot of effort in terms of doing my daily tasks on it or what it's meant for. VMware NSX is still a preferred product in the market."
"NSX is one of the simplest network solutions that I've ever worked with."
"VMware NSX is a great product for network virtualization, and it's great for enhancing security at the virtual machine level."
"I am impressed with the tool's protection."
"The most valuable features are stability and low cost."
"Firewall security is one of VMware NSX's vital features"
"It is easy to implement it."

Cons

"Anything to do with storage needs improvement. Storage is always very expensive; it fills up a lot and it's not very good at cloud-based solutions."
"Anything to do with storage needs improvement."
"The solution could improve by having a more streamlined setup."
"The initial setup for VMware NSX is a bit complex; it's not as simple as it could be."
"I think that one of the more important things to see better integrated into the NSX product would be an IDS/IPS type solution, which right now we're handing off to a third-party, which sometimes doubles the cost of the product."
"If an organization is not able to use NSX to its full potential (Switching, Routing, Load-balancing, Firewall, IDS, IPS etc.) then its not worth it."
"The support needs improvement."
"Quite a complex solution."
"Our technical team is always looking for the solutions that they work with to offer more convenient integrations."
"The solution can improve by making it more straightforward, easier to install and maintain in the environment."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pricing is reasonable. It's not cheap, but it's not expensive, it's in the middle."
"VMware NSX is a cheaper product compared to its competitor, Cisco."
"The price of this product is too high."
"We are using the free version of the solution."
"This solution requires a licence."
"The solution is free and the price for the support can be expensive."
"The licensing fees are expensive and we pay on a yearly basis."
"Our customers have definitely complained about its cost. It's expensive. I'd rate it a nine out of ten in terms of pricing where ten represents a high price. There are other products out there that are equally expensive."
"The tool's pricing is reasonable."
