Unified data protection has simplified hybrid backups and has improved ransomware recovery speed
Commvault Cloud's best feature in terms of protection is that it provides data protection and accomplishes its job effectively. It offers a unified approach to backup across all environments, including on-premises, public cloud, and SaaS applications such as M365 and Salesforce. I also use it for virtual machines and databases. The unified protection approach helps my team manage different environments effectively. Before Commvault Cloud, I used a separate VM backup tool to protect the VMware environment. For database backup, I had to use the native tool or backup scripts. For the cloud part, I had to use the native AWS or Azure cloud tools. After moving to Commvault Cloud, a single policy or a set of backup policies is applied across virtual machines, databases, workloads, and cloud workloads. I can protect my environments, which reduces manual configuration errors. Regarding visibility, it provides one dashboard to manage and centralize monitoring of all workloads. It is very easy to track backup success or failure. I can see the SLA compliance and storage usage without needing to jump between tools to check or have visibility of it. Regarding the recovery experience, the recovery time has been reduced drastically by using Commvault Cloud. It has simplified cloud management and provides easier manageability to manage retention policies, encryption policies, and compliance rules. This helps reduce operational workloads. Commvault Cloud has impacted me very positively. It simplifies and unifies data protection across hybrid workloads. Instead of managing multiple backup tools for virtual machines, databases, and SaaS applications, I now have a single platform with consistent policies and centralized visibility. This has really reduced my operational complexity and improved backup reliability. Regarding the cyber resiliency posture, the immutable backups and ransomware recovery workflow give me greater confidence in recovering quicker from potential risks. Commvault Cloud has positively impacted me in several key areas: unified backup management across environments, reduced operational overhead, improved ransomware resiliency, faster recovery times, better visibility for compliance, and easier management of hybrid or cloud workloads.

Has enabled seamless disaster recovery with virtual rollovers and rapid failovers between systems
Improving Precisely Assure MIMIX is going to be a really hard one; over the years, the tech support started off kind of rough but gradually got better and better as I used it often, being on a first-name basis with many of the customer service reps because of having to call with issues that they were always able to resolve fairly quickly. I would have liked to see more reporting, maybe automation of reports, but as far as integration with other systems, I always used Precisely Assure MIMIX on an AS/400, iSeries, IBM iSeries machine, and I cannot speak to using it on any other device.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Among the best features are the BMR (Bare Metal Recovery), Live Sync, and IntelliSnap, which is used for snapshots of hypervisor storage. It's predefined so you only need to enable it and it works. I haven't seen anything like this in other backup tools like Veritas NetBackup or Dell EMC or TSM. We will use snapshotting for all our machines."
"It is a scalable solution."
"Metallic's customer service — their technical support and their sales and customer contact representatives — were world-class; among the best customer service interactions I've had with anyone, anywhere, for any reason."
"The product is a reliable solution."
"Commvault is easy to deploy and easy to understand for any end-user or any new system."
"We can use it on-premises and in the cloud."
"The features I find most helpful in Commvault are its ability to perform incremental backups and significantly reduce backup times for our diverse multi-architecture, multi-environment environment."
"If you really want to understand your data, audit your data, really manipulate your data, and save money through your data, then Commvault is the place to go."
"Database replication is most valuable; it is multi-platform, so it can replicate from a variety of different database types to a variety of different database types, and it is a relatively stable database replication product."
"I see that the seamless synchronization feature is helpful for your organization or your customers' organization."
"The product's initial setup phase was straightforward and simple."
"Precisely Assure MIMIX has positively affected our organization by reducing downtime because it takes 30 minutes from swapping from one box to another; production is back up and running within 30 minutes, and a lot of times, I could get it down to 20 minutes."

Cons

"There are two ways to use it and I prefer the web-based one over the app. I wish they were a little bit more matched in what they offer because the features aren't as available in the web-based interface as they are in the app."
"I would like to see some of the code execute a little bit better when I add new licenses and assign licenses to users. I'd like to see that information update a little quicker."
"There is room for improvement in terms of data security."
"Sometimes, for customers, the setup is difficult compared to Veeam, which we sometimes also sell to much smaller customers."
"There is room for improvement in the Knowledge Base and error reporting. I would like to see best practices in the Knowledge Base, and have the ability to diagnose errors without contacting support."
"Its dashboard could be improved to provide a summarized version of all the jobs instead of having to go through each one of them."
"The product does not provide an option to save a copy of data on-premises."
"They don't market their products well. They don't do a lot of marketing to enable them to move forward."
"The pricing was a little steep; I believe it could have been lower, but for what I received as far as the service, the price is pretty close."
"The high cost of the product is an area of concern where improvements are required."
"One thing I see as a drawback in Precisely Assure MIMIX is that deployment is quite complex and it takes time."
"It does data manipulation language (DML) replication, but it does not do data definition language (DDL) replication. In my opinion, it is a disadvantage. It would be nicer if it was able to do both DML and DDL. I'm not 100% certain of this, but it seems Oracle Golden Gate does both DML and DDL. MIMIX only does DML, and it would be very nice if they included DDL replication. This is one feature that would be very helpful to have."
"There is certainly a strong lobby in the company that feels that by having so many copies of the same set of data throughout the organization, we are going in the wrong direction."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
"The complete license gives us options for all the features. Commvault does not license based on storage or the management components. It can integrate with any storage vendor. That means that when we are out of storage and need more, we can integrate without additional licensing. In my opinion, Commvault needs to reduce the licensing cost by 20 to 40 percent to make it cost-efficient."
"The cost for Commvault is very expensive, even support is very expensive. The full cost of the solution is 50,000 INR per year, which includes 20 VM backups, server data backup, and 200 desktop and laptop agent licenses."
"Commvault licensing is a perpetual license so only the support is being renewed yearly."
"Hands down, Metallic provides us with more predictable costs for our backup requirements. You are getting what you pay for. If they are charging you X amount of dollars at that point, that is what you are going to pay. So far, I have not seen any hidden costs or any kind of gotchas. It is pretty cut-and-dry. They will let you know, "Hey, you are going to use our storage and it will cost you this much. You are going to use your storage, then we are going to charge you this much to backup.""
"Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
"The tool is cost-effective."
"...the battle came down to pricing, as well as some small features, and Commvault was the best in all the criteria."
"The cost of the product is too high."
"The licensing provides the access to support. I do know that there's an annual charge for being able to call into their support line and get a technical team from Precisely to assist with any issues we may have. I don't think there are any additional costs other than what we incur internally in terms of the infrastructure that we need to run and operate the product."
