Log pipelines have reduced daily data volume and now simplify traffic analysis
Overall, the pipelines and all the features are good with Cribl. The UI is good. Just sometimes, when I actually started using Cribl, I faced the issue where I was not able to connect the nodes. The pipeline is structured in a certain way, then the data will be routed to there, and something of that nature. I was very much confused about their whole products, such as Data Lake and pipelines. It's possible that at that time I didn't take any university courses, which is why I did not know much. But if they can give an intro on how we can connect nodes, or they can provide simple use cases showing what you can do with Cribl, it would help. If you just need to add the source and the destination and pre-build some proper workflow, then it will be easy for new customers to navigate through Cribl.

Hands-on monitoring has built my threat detection skills and now supports my graduate research
The biggest challenges I have experienced with Security Onion are the learning curve and resource requirements, as it is not necessarily something you can install and immediately understand without networking and Linux knowledge. I actually encountered an HTTP 500 error with the management interface recently, which required troubleshooting and expanding my storage, showing me how important storage planning and system maintenance are when running Security Onion. What I would improve about Security Onion is probably the documentation around troubleshooting common issues, particularly storage management, and making the interface more approachable for new users. Having documentation of what works best would help, especially since you can have nodes or have it all built-in one as a standalone. If you use nodes, you have to have several different Security Onion instances downloaded, then have a manager and connect all of them together.

Pros

"The return on investment with Cribl is huge."
"What I like most about Cribl is the overall pipeline structure and easiness."
"Cribl intelligently formats syslogs, extracting the data and reducing their size by almost 30 to 40 percent in my experience, stripping out null values and discarding what is not required so only what is needed is presented."
"Cribl is specifically designed to reduce the data costs associated with the destination platform, which is one of its core offerings."
"The feature I appreciate most about Cribl is that it is really easy to use and quick to replicate data models on different data sets."
"Cribl actually has sorted out our problems, but it will probably be better."
"Cribl Cloud has no issues with handling large data ingestion volumes."
"Cribl provides visibility and helps in that regard; we get real-time metrics, allowing us to see when we need to increase the compute of our servers or when we have over-provisioned resources."
"Security Onion is the most mature solution in the market."
"We use Security Onion for internal vulnerability assessment."
"Security Onion is a completely open-source and free platform, making it a cost-effective solution that works smoothly and effectively for our organization."
"The most valuable feature of Security Onion for security monitoring is its ability to find infected ports."

"What I appreciate most about Security Onion is that it combines multiple security monitoring tools into one platform."
"Security Onion brings these tools together in one platform, making it easier to investigate security events and understand what's happening across the network."

Cons

"There is room for improvement in Cribl, as managing data from around forty thousand servers can become complex."
"What I dislike about Cribl are the documentation gaps and the setup complexity."
"Cribl Stream is good, but I feel they could develop more products apart from Cribl Stream for my use case."
"My experience with the user interface when managing log processing tasks is quite complex for new beginners, and there is also a documentation gap that leads new beginners to take a while to get fluency over the software."
"I do not think that if the pricing is on the higher side, it could be suitable for all types of users, such as small or medium ones."
"One thing I think is that Cribl is very dependent on the packs. If you don't have packs and you need to do things on your own, it's not trivial."
"On the other hand, I would like to see improvements in pack management, which is currently a mess with no way to manage packs differently across worker groups."
"There have been several administrative issues. Another point is that the browsing functions aren't very intuitive."
"One way Security Onion could improve is by making the initial setup and configuration easier, especially for new users."
"The initial setup of the solution is a little bit difficult."
"Security Onion's user interface could be improved."
"The product is not easy to learn."

"Security Onion can be made easier to set up initially, as it is somewhat difficult at the start, but once configured, it becomes a great tool to use."
"One of the improvements for Security Onion could be to address the issue of many logs and false positive alerts by reducing the number of false positives, as storage management is very hard sometimes due to a lack of storage space for logs, and they could implement methods to expand storage."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The product pricing is reasonable compared to other solutions."
"I would not say it is a cheaply priced tool as it has been doing wonders in the market. The tool has been budget-friendly for organizations."
"It is an open-source solution."
"Security Onion is an open-source solution."
"Security Onion is a free solution."
