User finds setup straightforward but seeks wider platform support and advanced features
Microsoft DPM could implement backup capabilities for third-party systems such as Linux. They also need to consider other features such as replication to DR sites, similar to what Veeam and other products offer. Microsoft DPM didn't have that capability at that time. If they want to remain competitive in the market, they need to observe the competition and implement improvements. The backup should have compression, deduplication, and DR replication. They should also improve monitoring of the environment. Microsoft DPM didn't have these basics at that time. If they had continued development on the products, they could have reached a higher level, especially given Microsoft's significant presence and majority of servers. Microsoft DPM didn't have any support structure in the backend. If they had a support structure, we could have escalated issues. I never received any support from Microsoft DPM.

Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I found Microsoft DPM pretty useful as it satisfied most of my requirements and seems to be fulfilling all the requirements for our backup strategy."
"Microsoft support for this product is very good."
"Microsoft DPM's is easy to set up."
"The automated procedure is quite good for us, as it is able to capture all of the information that we require."
"The most valuable feature is that DPM has an index so individual files can be searched."
"One of the most effective features of Microsoft DPM is its integration with the entire Microsoft ecosystem."
"The solution really does great recovery."
"The most valuable feature is the total integration of the System Center solution."
"Data Protector is very good at automation; from the time of the backup, verification, and copy to tape, it is very good, and I don't need to touch it because it will do it by itself."
"Since we implemented the new PostgreSQL database, Data Protector's stability has greatly improved."
"It is the best solution for general operations like backup and restore."
"Overall, when compared with other restore solutions, I can say most of the good features are packed inside a software that has a small footprint."
"I've used the product for a long time and am very familiar with all its features."
"The most valuable feature of Data Protector is its integration with VMware. A lot of software these days integrates with VMware, and you can run some of these things on virtual machines. You can even have your backup manager running on a virtual machine and use physical managers to move data around. Their VMware integration isn't too bad, but Commvault has that feature, and many other backup products do."
"It is really easy to backup and restore your data across all servers, something that IBM Spectrum Protect struggles to do."
"Regarding scalability, it's unlimited with Data Protector. You can link multiple installations and let them work together. They can share backup devices. You have many possibilities with Data Protector. It's very proficient."

Cons

"It needs portability for other vendors. It is good for backing up Microsoft servers, but it doesn't support third-party solutions such as Oracle Database. It depends on Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy, especially for Hyper-V, which has a lot of problems. They should enhance the Volume Shadow Copy functionality. Its reporting should also be better. Reporting is too weak in DPM."
"The DPM is pretty good, but when it comes to external devices, you can't back up to the external device."
"The stability in Microsoft DPM 2015 was better than the 2019 version; we have had some problems."
"The user friendliness could be improved."
"Overall, I wouldn't describe the solution as user-friendly. It's not very intuitive."
"Additional Hyper-V knowledge would be great."
"Optimization of fabric administrator cause management problem to arise in backup administrator as it leads to the backup software failure in a manner that cannot be foreseen or anticipated finding backup administrators unawares."
"Recent minor upgrade required a reboot of all of my protected 2008 servers. This I considered unacceptable as I had to reschedule an outage window to reboot 100+ servers."
"VM backups needs to be improved. They need to make it similar to the way Veeam and Commvault are doing the virtual backups."
"Every time there is a backup running, I cannot predict anything, so I cannot say if it will back up the first time."
"We face challenges with its stability."
"The product can be developed by including functionalities like DR, CDP, and SureBackup, which are currently unavailable in the solution."
"Customer Service: It's not good and needs to be improved. Technical Support: It's not good and needs to be improved."
"Other tools seem to be easier to use."
"There have been some issues."
"I really wouldn't recommend others to use this solution - especially when it comes to the technical support."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I think Microsoft DPM pricing is reasonable. The additional costs are related to storage and technical support."
"Microsoft DPM can be considered as an expensive solution for smaller or medium enterprises, but we have been satisfied with the price structure as it is fixed and it offers a variety of useful features"
"Microsoft DPM is a free solution. However, we pay approximately $3,000 annually for support."
"Data Protector's pricing is very competitive and we have no issues in this regard. I would give it an eight out of ten in terms of pricing."
"The solution requires paying for a license."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"There is a perpetual license involved in addition to support which needs to be renewed annually."
"They have two types of licensing, one is for storage capacity and the other is client licensing. The capacity licensing here is a bit expensive."
"Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
"The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
