Careful data design has delivered consistent transactions and supports reliable microservices
MySQL is a reliable and mature relational database, but there are a few areas where it could be improved. One area is horizontal scalability. While MySQL supports scaling for applications, handling write-heavy workloads often requires additional solutions such as sharding, which adds complexity. Another area where it could improve is in native support for advanced analytics and large-scale distributed processing, which may require specialized databases. Changing the database schema on large tables can also be challenging and may require careful planning to minimize downtime. Performance tuning is powerful, but identifying and optimizing slow queries often requires manual analysis and experience. Having more built-in performance insights and automated optimization recommendations would be helpful for administrators. In terms of documentation and security, I think MySQL could be improved in those areas. While the official documentation is comprehensive, it can sometimes be difficult for beginners to navigate, especially for advanced topics such as application partitioning and query optimization. More practical examples and architecture-focused guides would be beneficial. On the integration side, MySQL already works well with frameworks such as Spring Boot and Hibernate, but enhancing support for modern cloud-native deployments, Kubernetes, and automated observability would simplify operations. MySQL is a mature and dependable database, and I hope to see improvements primarily around administration, better operational tooling, and a smoother developer experience rather than fundamental database capabilities.

Connecting to databases and retrieving data effectively
I have experience connecting to a database with Java by using Java code and interrogating the database The valuable features include connecting to the database and retrieving data. Additionally, I can use SQL Developer to check the data and update tables in the database if needed. It allows me to…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature is the on-premises data encryption facilities."
"MySQL has cross-platform support for multiple operating systems. The backups on a Linux machine can be restored on a Windows machine, and vice versa."
"This product is valuable because it is used in production environments."
"Installation, because in a few seconds, the product was up and running."
"Now we use something where we can share the instances of the database which were created virtually, which is a very good feature, which I felt has improved our organization."
"The most valuable features are that it's free and the documentation is good."
"It is free, which is probably its most valuable feature, and it is a pretty full-featured relational database that really does everything we need it to do."
"MySQL is a very useful database which is used by a lot of companies, so it should be really good."
"The stability is awesome because it is all supported by Oracle database and Oracle relational database management system, which watches very carefully all the processes that are running, making it very stable and very secure."
"The solution is stable."
"The valuable features include connecting to the database and retrieving data."
"It has a programming language so anything that we require for Selenium is all available there."
"The additional value of having Java inside the Oracle database is all the security that is applied to an Oracle database will be enforced on Java's stored procedures as well."
"It's very clever."
"Our ROI has been a 600% growth in stock price, one of the biggest increase rates for any of the global top 50 companies."
"This is a fairly stable language, and it's been in the market for several years."

Cons

"Integration is a key feature in need of improvement, as we have spent hours building this just to ensure that a set of data is exposed to a different client, a different world in need of that data."
"We want high availability and replication features, which are currently missing in this solution. It would be great if they can provide an in-built replication feature, similar to Oracle RAC, in MySQL."
"It is not as powerful as SQL Server. It can be more powerful. It is not scalable and has certain limitations, which is not the case with SQL Server."
"Scalability: In large databases, they become slow."
"The solution could have better integration and security features."
"Replication and HA features, but that is to be expected at this entry point."
"The integration with other systems can be improved as can the integration between other databases."
"MySQL could introduce more indexing strategies."
"The biggest lesson that I have learned from using Oracle products is vendor lock-in."
"Needs improvement in consistency issues with respect to timeframes."
"In terms of improvement, I'd like an automation tool that is lower priced. The core prices are very high."
"With respect to the product's consistency, there's a lot of scope that could be introduced in regulator basis."
"The solution should continue to keep updating and improving the Java language."
"It'll be better if Oracle Java supports open source technologies, like Node.js."
"Oracle can improve by providing more connection string variations and relay servers on the path to the database."
"The tool might be integrated, but we see performance issues because of overhead."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"MySQL is free."
"The tool is open source."
"Can range from free to quite expensive, depending on the environments and requirements, so better to really set goals ahead of setting it up."
"This is an open-source product that can be used free of charge."
"There is no cost involved, no licensing fees."
"The tool is open source."
"Microsoft licensing for SQL Server is probably ten times more expensive. I used to work for the government, and I remember when we were looking into upgrading to the enterprise version of SQL Server 2019, the licensing was going to cost 350,000. To get the equivalent in the cloud, it was going to be about four grand to get the same processing power and everything else. With MySQL, it was going to be about 300 for the same licensing. Cost-wise, for sure, there is a huge difference. Would you prefer to pay 300 a month or 3,000 to have the same amount of data resources? You might lose a few options that you need, but it isn't worth the price difference."
"I don't pay for a license."
"Oracle Java DB is a pricey solution."
"The product's pricing is very friendly, with no extra costs after the licensing fees."
