Can be used to back up servers and desktops, but needs to have an Oracle agent for its on-premises model
Retrospect Backup has a single console that can be used to manage and backup servers and desktops. The solution supports tape and cloud since certain customers are still on tape. The solution provides a dissimilar hardware restore feature. If you have a complete machine burnout, you can restore it on new dissimilar hardware. Retrospect Backup is used to protect file data and SQL databases. Streamlining data backup processes with Retrospect Backup is automated and does not need any human intervention. The solution doesn't take up much time and does the backups automatically. Policy creation is very easy with Retrospect Backup. Once it's done, you don't have to bother about it because it keeps working on its own. A disaster recovery (DR) solution has been built into Retrospect Backup. You can restore the whole machine on a fresh setup with ISO images. Retrospect Backup is very easy to use and not very complicated. Creating policies and adding clients is very easy in the solution. The solution doesn't take up much LAN bandwidth except for the first full backup. The solution is efficient and does the backups really fast. It takes backups in batches of 14 machines at a time.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Retrospect Backup has a single console that can be used to manage and backup servers and desktops."
"The backup solution comes in different versions to support different platforms."
"The most important part of any organization is the data, and when you do a backup, you want the data to be available whenever it is required, and Veritas offers a more predictable backup and recovery process."
"We are satisfied with the stability of the product."
"It is one of the most stable backup solutions."
"The price is reasonable for the features it offers."
"I find Veritas to be quite useful and it fits completely with my business requirements."
"The backup feature was the most valuable for us, as we used it on Exchange and SQL for mass files and folders, and for full backups we were able to restore Exchange, SQL, and even single files successfully."
"Good open file option feature, SQL agent, and EM agent."

Cons

"Retrospect Backup needs to have an Oracle agent for its on-premises model."
"The solution can be improved by adding the ability to restore individual mailboxes. Currently, the solution does not have the capability to restore a single mailbox, so you lose a lot of time having to restore for example ten mailboxes just to recover one."
"It is currently missing the dynamic backup feature for virtual machines, which is available in NetWorker. I can create politics in NetWorker to add virtual machines with specific tags, but I cannot do this in Backup Exec, which is a minus point for me. Currently, a user has to send a request to the Backup administrator to add a machine to the backup, but I should be able to create rules to automatically add a new machine to the backup. This kind of functionality is very important in current times, especially when we are using cloud solutions. I should be able to create more than one stream in a policy and specify how many streams I want to run in parallel in one policy. Currently, I have to manually create more policies to backup more than one virtual machine at the same time. Their support can also be improved in terms of response time."
"It is not a recommended software when it comes to large environments where there has to be a minimal Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and/or Recover Point Objective (RPO)."
"For the price I've seen, it could be lower compared to other products."
"There were issues with stability, such as big issues/error messages when trying to restore SQL instances, Exchange datastores, or single files."
"Its scalability should be improved."
"Most features work when agents are installed on servers, but you have to pay extra for most of them."
"Technical support needs improvement. It is difficult to find a technician, or even a knowledgeable person because most of their technicians are not well-versed in their product."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Retrospect Backup is more cost-effective compared to other products."
"The price is reasonable for the features it offers."
"I rate the product's pricing a six out of ten."
"It is a mid-range solution on the pricing scale."
"Veritas comes with an annual licensing fee."
"Regarding expense, Backup Exec is generally suitable for small and medium businesses. However, we can customize them based on the workload."
"If your company can afford it, go for it."
"The pricing can be improved."
"The product's price is reasonable."
