Room For Improvement

Snowflake users desire UI, statistical modeling, GCP integration, error visibility, reporting tools, better ETL, AI features, and SQL-based procedures.
SQL Server needs improved support, performance, pricing, security, scalability, easier management, integration, documentation, and enhanced analytics features.
A specific example is when they told us they fully support Iceberg, and then they have over three thousand words of bullet point text with a link to reference articles with all the limitations of their Iceberg support.
Enhancements in user experience for data observability and quality checks would be beneficial, as these tasks currently require SQL coding, which might be challenging for some users.
Data Architect at a tech services company with 10,001+ employees
What things you are going with to ask the support and how we manage the relationship matters a lot.
Asset Builder at Genpact - Headstrong
It is fine to do a first release that works, but you cannot simply abandon it in the following years without service packs and improvements.
Data Warehouse Lead at Resurs Bank AB (publ.)
It would be valuable to have more intelligent, built-in recommendations for root cause analysis, indexing, blocking, and query optimization.
SQL server database administrator at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees
I would appreciate using Microsoft Pro as it can integrate with Excel or, with a simple query, consume information from the database using Microsoft Excel.
Infrastructure Coordinator at a financial services firm with 10,001+ employees

Setup Cost

Snowflake's pay-as-you-go model offers competitive pricing and flexibility, appealing to enterprises despite licensing complexity and cost unpredictability.
SQL Server licensing varies by edition and cost, with complexity and additional fees challenging smaller organizations despite available discounts.
When it comes to cloud support, the setup cost is very cheap compared to other platforms, such as Oracle or PostgreSQL, which typically require higher costs.
Data Integration Developer at a tech services company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Snowflake's pricing is on the higher side.
Technology Leader at eTCaaS
Snowflake lacks transparency in estimating resource usage.
Data Architect at a tech services company with 10,001+ employees
Cost savings on human resources for Windows plus SQL Server versus other solutions.
Manager - Production Database Administration at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees
I think the pricing is high, but I am not sure how much our organization is paying, as I am not part of the management team.
Data Engineer at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees
My experience with SQL Server's pricing, setup costs, and licensing is that it can be one of the more complex and expensive aspects of operating at an enterprise level.

Valuable Features

Snowflake excels in data sharing, recovery, scalability, and integration with major cloud platforms, offering robust and cost-effective performance.
SQL Server is praised for scalability, security, user-friendliness, strong performance, integration, and extensive support, ensuring reliable data management.
We had a comparison with Databricks and Snowflake a few months back, and this auto-scaling takes an edge within Snowflake; that's what our observation reflects.
Asset Builder at Genpact - Headstrong
I have used the Snowflake Zero-Copy Cloning feature in the past while prototyping data in lower environments. This feature is helpful as it saves a lot of time during the data replication process.
Senior Data Engineer at a tech services company with 11-50 employees
Snowflake has contributed to significant cost savings.
Data Integration Developer at a tech services company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Always On HADR functionality is one of the features that I use on a daily basis and one of my most used features, saving me lots of time, especially since previously I had to build a SQL cluster and Windows clusters that had many dependencies on shared infrastructure, but now with Always On, it is too stable with easy management and almost zero maintenance, which SQL Server handles itself.
Manager - Production Database Administration at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees
The feature I find most valuable in SQL Server is Query Store, especially for production performance troubleshooting, as it provides a historical view of query execution, duration, CPU, I/O, and the execution plan, allowing me to compare current performance with previous behavior.
SQL server database administrator at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees
I have been working with SQL Server for a long time, and it works well for me as I am using it in different applications, such as web applications, Windows applications, or the data warehouse reporting.

Have prioritized security while managing multi-agent data migration and cloud adoption
We utilize Time Travel with Snowflake because this is a very useful feature. Everyone finds it crucial because in conventional data platforms, it's very difficult to handle these kinds of things. This feature is essential, though I don't have the use cases currently; it is just there for implementation. Regarding Snowflake's automated scaling and suspension features, this auto-scaling is very significant. We had a comparison with Databricks and Snowflake a few months back, and this auto-scaling takes an edge within Snowflake; that's what our observation reflects.

Hybrid data platform has strengthened performance, security, and incident response for production
SQL Server is very mature, but I see areas for improvement, especially in performance tuning, troubleshooting, and automation. Although tools such as Query Store and dynamic management views are powerful, some troubleshooting tasks still require senior SQL Server database administrator expertise. It would be valuable to have more intelligent, built-in recommendations for root cause analysis, indexing, blocking, and query optimization. I would also like to see simplified and consistent management across on-premises SQL Server and Azure SQL services, as managing hybrid environments sometimes requires different tools and approaches. Finally, improved patching, updates, monitoring, and cost and license transparency could make SQL Server easier to manage at the enterprise scale. One area I would improve in SQL Server is its documentation and troubleshooting guidance. SQL Server documentation is comprehensive, but for complex production issues, I would like to see more real-world troubleshooting examples, especially for scenarios such as Always On synchronization issues, blocking and deadlocks, performance degradation, and upgrade features.
