Unified security has simplified multi-appliance work but still needs more architectural flexibility
There is room for improvement when it comes to their features and architectures they're trying to implement that they can't directly help with. But by and large, it's actually relatively good. More flexibility would make Sophos Cyberoam UTM better. The platform is not entirely flexible as it is. For example, with Cisco ASA and Firepower, you have the command line that can give you more flexibility in terms of the kind of architectures that you can put them in. But for Sophos Cyberoam UTM, you don't really have that access that can give you those network flexibilities that would allow you to do some other types of architectures.

I use it mostly for VPN and for some firewall solutions When considering my main use case with VPN, I can say that I got the Zyxel Unified Security Gateway, and it works fine. However, we are thinking about using a different solution based on open source because Zyxel Unified Security Gateway…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is excellent for web and application filtering and remote access with the VPN."
"The user interface is well laid out and understandable."
"Cyberoam UTM's most valuable feature is that it can be configured any way you like."
"For a small-medium enterprise this solution is easy to manage and operate."
"Bandwidth Management and aggregation. It is valuable for combining two ISPs. Switching to a secondary/redundant ISP is thus seamless, in the event that the primary ISP goes down. The Bandwidth Management is also valuable for limiting heavy downloaders that may impact negatively on the experience of other users."
"Easy deployment, good hardware specification, classy reporting tools, no user count restrictions etc. A features-packed and powerful UTM appliance at the higher end of the price spectrum, but worth it."
"My primary use case of this product is as threat protection services and it works well."
"It is very easy to use."
"The cost is very low."
"The Zyxel Unified Security Gateway solution is stable and does its job effectively."
"The solution can scale well."
"The most valuable features of the solution stem from web filtering, malware protection, and antivirus."
"This is a capable appliance and the standard features work well for us."

Cons

"The solution is at its end of life and some of the appliances are finishing."
"I have problems with the email filtering. Emails pass through without any filtering affecting them. When I get back to them and tell them this is the issue, they check everything and say it is not in their database signature and they have to update it. But you know, by that time, my user has already opened it."
"The solution had a feature to import users from a CSV file. However, the latest version does not have that option."
"What needs improvement in Sophos Cyberoam UTM is openness in the competition among Sophos partners or any other Sophos product. Another area for improvement in the solution is pricing. It could be cheaper."
"More flexibility would make Sophos Cyberoam UTM better. The platform is not entirely flexible as it is."
"Performance is a legitimate concern under high traffic conditions."
"The price is appropriate, but if you want the real truth, it's actually quite expensive."
"Policy configuration and implementation is a bit lengthy process."
"The product has some scalability and data management issues where improvements are required."
"The integration capability is quite challenging. The system is very complicated, and many features are hidden."
"I have never seen it in any company that I've worked with before, and I would advise other companies not to buy it."
"Although manageable, the user interface is a little bit slow and could be improved. The advanced UI allows me to do whatever I want, but this is where the issue of speed exists."
"Sometimes it reboots when you least expect it, and that's the main issue."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I rate the solution's pricing a five out of ten, where one is cheap, and ten is high."
"Sophos Cyberoam UTM needs cheaper pricing."
"The product’s pricing is expensive."
"It’s value for the money. It’s functionally competitive with higher priced alternative brands."
"The product is reasonably priced."
"We pay for licensing the solution. It's my understanding that it is not overly expensive. It may be somewhere around $2,000 for a license."
"There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
"There is a license required for this solution and we are on a three-year contract. I am satisfied with the price."
