Centralized backup has improved data protection and simplifies secure, compliant restores
The biggest advantage of the product is that it is basically a single appliance which comes with a bundle of backup software and the appliance, as we have a single console to manage it. It also provides other features such as data encryption at rest, along with data deduplication and compression in backup which is very useful. From the centralized dashboard, we can manage the backup job and determine if the backup job is happening appropriately or not. If any backup job fails, we can find out the root cause for the failures. Because it is a hardware-based appliance, we can restore the data immediately, and it provides genuine restore capabilities. In terms of data availability compliance, we are looking for data availability and data security in terms of encryption, data deduplication and compression. It provides data availability as each appliance comes with RAID. If one or two disks fail, then our data appliance is still available for backup. It also provides encryption, so our data is also ransomware protected.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) is versatile because I can use it for any type of use case, as it is an all-in-one box."
"Instead of four or five tools, consisting of backup software, storage where the backup resides, and a separate system for reporting and central monitoring, they all now come in the virtual edition for IDP."
"What I find valuable about Dell PowerProtect IDPA is its stability and strong performance."
"The product is easy to troubleshoot and store data."
"IDPA's best feature is Turbo Boost Technology. The compression and duplication features are excellent, too."
"Dell PowerProtect is stable and scalable."
"It is very simple to perform an upgrade of the system and the environment."
"The biggest advantage of the product is that it is basically a single appliance which comes with a bundle of backup software and the appliance, as we have a single console to manage it."
"The initial setup is straightforward if you understand Data Protector."
"OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers."
"The most valuable feature is the protection of our data with the backup capability and performance."
"Data Protector works in conjunction with a Catalyst-based deduplication feature and HPE StoreOnce appliances to provide us with the tools to build reliable DR solutions for backups through Catalyst stores replication using ARS between the sites."
"I have used Micro Focus Data Protector for the file backup facilities. My primary use of the software is to backup file data."
"The solution is easy to use."
"Backup of SAP/Oracle -- they are more robust than the competition."
"This solution is quite stable because we have only three users."

Cons

"The only disadvantage I can see with Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) is the cost."
"However, I would say the bare-metal restores need improvement because if you have a failure on a certain piece of hardware, you have to replace it with the same hardware, which is the only thing I can mention."
"The only thing that could be improved would be the complexity of the initial setup."
"Dell PowerProtect DP needs to include more features and improve backup for a continual base."
"The negative aspect I can mention regarding Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) is that when it was built on VMware, it had some flaws, and the system was not built properly, necessitating access to individual VMs for configuration and troubleshooting, which has been resolved in the DM version."
"One area of Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) that can be improved is probably more integrations with third-party software, particularly third-party backup software."
"There is room for improvement in terms of network connectivity."
"The price could be lowered slightly, to make it more competitive."
"The major issue we are facing in this product is Sybase database integration."
"The technical support is poor and should be improved."
"I really wouldn't recommend others to use this solution - especially when it comes to the technical support."
"In v7, some W2012 clients fail occasionally."
"Micro Focus are improving Data Protector with every new version and since we began undergoing training with the latest version we have not faced any real challenges yet. However, their support does need to be improved, in my opinion. In certain critical cases that we've had, they did not provide a satisfactory level of support."
"The UX dates back to a very historic past."
"I do not think that this solution is relevant in the current IT market. They have not upgraded their features and functionalities which makes it difficult for them to remain competitive."
"Other tools seem to be easier to use."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have a perpetual license. It is a capacity-based license."
"The licensing is billed on a monthly basis. Dell is bundled so that when you order IDPA, you get everything together with the license."
"Dell PowerProtect DP (IDPA) has a yearly subscription fee."
"It is a cost-effective solution."
"I would rate the solution's pricing a seven out of ten."
"The solution requires paying for a license."
"Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
"They have two types of licensing, one is for storage capacity and the other is client licensing. The capacity licensing here is a bit expensive."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"It is more affordable compared to other vendors."
"The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
