Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

Daily recovery tests have validated restore readiness and ensured consistent data protection
The best features of Unitrends include the daily reporting functionality. When backups fail, it is obvious in the logs what caused the issue. Most times it is a credential problem, which is relatively easy to resolve. Though I have experienced a few more challenging issues, nothing has affected critical backup restore functionality. Every time I have needed to restore something, it has worked successfully. The support team is readily available when I need assistance, and they help walk me through issues, solving them within a reasonable timeframe. The automated backup scheduling feature has helped our organization in managing backup timelines and consistency by handling all the work automatically. We set the schedule, breaking things into smaller chunks since our main common area for files is large. I have staggered the backups so some areas receive more attention than others, particularly for less active data. Adding, removing, excluding, and inputting elements is straightforward. The system makes it simple to schedule portions and generate reports on their functionality. The impact of Unitrends' instant recovery features on strengthening data security measures is significant. I generally use instant recovery when restoring specific files or instances where we need data that has changed. The process involves loading the backup, selecting the desired version, waiting for it to unpack, and retrieving the file. Every restore attempt has been successful. I run instant recovery daily in test mode on two virtual machines. I use it to test my domain controller and file server to ensure they communicate properly in the test environment. This ensures that in case of failure, I can activate the recovery and restore server functionality.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution is very stable, it was very helpful."
"We can quickly restore files that have been deleted or are missing from the system."
"Overall, when compared with other restore solutions, I can say most of the good features are packed inside a software that has a small footprint."
"Reading the manual and following instructions will result in a working version."
"If you are an enterprise, and you need a strong backup solution, Micro Focus is for you."
"The most valuable feature of Data Protector is its integration with VMware."
"Data Protector is absolutely stable for us."
"Our complete Data Centre HP Data Protector deployment was AU$46,000."
"The predictive analytics are great and the reporting is awesome."
"Iinstant recovery (allows a spin-up of your image as a VM on the appliance)."
"It was the first time I had ever seen a very good reporting system that provided a daily report that I call a traffic light report."
"Overall I really like the solution."
"It has reduced recovery time, from recovering VMs to just simple file-level recovery, and it's all fast and easy."
"The stability is rock solid."
"It is an easy system to use, and the support, if needed, is always willing to help."
"Unitrends allows us to easily add new assets to our existing backup strategy with no headaches."

Cons

"While technically it's a good product, the technical support is an area that could use a lot of improvement."
"The UX dates back to a very historic past."
"What we wanted was disk-to-disk replication. After we got that nailed down, we then wanted to replicate from disk to tape. We were told that we can't do that, and then we were told it doesn't let you do it unless you buy it with a license."
"They should design the solution so that it is much easier for deployment and make the UI easy to use."
"We are switching to Veeam because Data Protector is lacking good virtualization features and because the cost is very high."
"It has a lot of undeveloped functions like window searching and patent searching, and within the main backup processes like VMware and Microsoft Exchange. It's completely not user-friendly, and it has no built-in antivirus software. In my opinion, Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution."
"Virtualization."
"The GUI needs to be easier to administrate. Also, it should have better access to more materials to help understanding the product (like the difference between INCR and INCR1, etc. and how it works)."
"Having issues backing up systems with tons of small files."
"If the interface could be less complex, it would be great. It's not the easiest to get around and to work with."
"Unitrends can be challenging to scale."
"Technical support is quite inadequate. Techs don't seem to be well-versed in troubleshooting issues that arise and tickets stay opened for weeks for resolution."
"Configuring some of the advanced features however can be very tedious and difficult."
"It seems like Unitrends moved away from enterprise customer engagement and moved more towards the managed service provider market."
"The only area that I would say needs some improvements is the initial setup."
"Follow up for the DRaaS service setup. I'm still waiting to schedule a DRaaS test after upgrading several months ago."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
"In Data Protector, if you need extra features, you need to buy the agents for these features. Some of the features are Terabytes, some of them are agents. There's some complexity in the pricing and licensing."
"The licensing cost is too high."
"The product is cheaper than Commvault."
"The pricing is acceptable for enterprise level companies, but it's not acceptable for small- and medium-sized businesses. Micro Focus Data Protector is not an enterprise level solution, and it should cover small- and medium-sized businesses with acceptable prices."
"They have two types of licensing, one is for storage capacity and the other is client licensing. The capacity licensing here is a bit expensive."
"It is more affordable compared to other vendors."
"The solution requires paying for a license."
"Unitrends is an expensive solution."
"Pricing model constantly changes."
"The cost of Unitrends definitely draws you in. The licensing is all included in the appliance, which is a great incentive."
"Initial pricing is competitive. Renewal pricing is steep, so make sure to project costs for the lifetime of the appliance(s)."
"Their licensing depended on the number of CPUs you had."
"Make sure you do the homework to size the solution properly. Buy the Enterprise Plus licensing if you can afford it."
"I would rate the solution's pricing a four out of ten. The licensing is yearly and it depends on the customers."
