Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

High-speed backup and strong deduplication have supported secure long-term data protection
In my opinion, what can be improved about Veritas NetBackup Appliance includes licensing. A mixed licensing model would be more helpful, such as terabytes plus virtual machines, terabytes plus instances, or number of instances. I believe this could work and create a new competitive licensing model against other products. Additionally, embedding Enterprise Vault or some of its features in the backup software would enable better competition with Commvault, which offers backup and archiving from the same console. For the next release of Veritas NetBackup Appliance, I would like to see improvements in licensing, increased deduplication ratio, and enhanced high availability. Having high availability for Veritas NetBackup Appliance without requiring virtual storage like Cohesity would be important. Improving the overall high availability of Veritas NetBackup Appliance would be beneficial.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Micro Focus Data Protector is a stable solution and, when compared to other storage or backup tools on the market, it is extremely competitive because it is user-friendly, has multi-vendor support, and also supports cloud platforms as well as local storage."
"The most valuable feature is the ability to recover individual files."
"It is our enterprise backup solution centralizing all backup needs."
"In terms of actually, reliably, backing things up, Data Protector is superior to the other products that we've used in-house."
"Reading the manual and following instructions will result in a working version."
"Data Protector is a very mature product that allows custom backups, scheduling, and copying in a manner that reduces the amount of time spent with backups from an administrative point of view."
"Ability to automatically detect and secure new data sources without requiring manual configuration intervention."
"The solution is easy to use."
"The Veritas NetBackup Appliance is convenient because it’s a portable device and doesn’t require a lot of additional hardware or licenses like VPN solutions."
"We mainly use Windows for all our operating systems. Our databases are SQL databases. For backups, we set up one master server and three process servers. Our company isn't big, so this setup works well for us. We install the Veritas NetBackup Appliance agent on all the systems that need to be backed up."
"We can add multiple appliances to the product."
"The consistency of using it over a long period of time has been excellent."
"The product is quite stable and reliable; there are no bugs or glitches and it doesn't crash or freeze, and its performance is good."
"NetBackup is easy to use and user-friendly."
"We rarely need their help. I would give their technical support an 8.5 out of ten. We are satisfied."
"A specific example where Veritas NetBackup Appliance helped me recover data or avoid a major issue is when I had a scenario where a customer was using two backup applications, one being Veritas NetBackup Appliance and the other one being one of the other common Windows-based solutions, the environment was attacked by ransomware, and they were able to recover 100 percent using Veritas NetBackup Appliance, whereas the other backup solution was 100 percent affected."

Cons

"In SAP restoration, we faced issues with changing the SIDs and changing the path for every backup object. It is quite a lengthy process to do that."
"While technically it's a good product, the technical support is an area that could use a lot of improvement."
"The Virtual Environment component needs to be improved."
"Faster VEAgent Restores"
"The Disk Agent feature is pretty basic, for instance, with the included wildcards."
"OpenText Data Protector is not user-friendly, especially for cloud backup."
"We have a lot of requests for the Micro Focus team, particularly in terms of the Japanese data pattern, as it's not as good now. The Japanese data pattern accuracy of the Micro Focus Data Protector needs to be improved because there are a lot of false negatives and false positives. We are currently testing this and our product team has been communicating with the Micro Focus team."
"OpenText Data Protector is more difficult to use and configure than OpenText VIM. The user-friendliness of OpenText Data Protector has to be increased, and the complexity of the tool needs to be reduced."
"Veritas NetBackup Appliance needs to improve its security. It needs to ensure that it is 100 percent protected against cyberattacks."
"The only room for improvement is that the cost per terabyte is extremely high."
"Figuring out pricing from the site is challenging because the initial pricing mentioned on the site is too high."
"The configuration can sometimes be tricky during implementation."
"Veritas NetBackup would benefit from better explained error codes."
"The reporting feature can be improved."
"They could simplify the process of installing, and provide more space for data during the process."
"Customers say that the price for Veritas NetBackup Appliance is high."

"The licensing cost is too high."
"We have many competitors who are pricing better, and we believe that our pricing is higher."
